I'm going to buy some lights...is this good?

I can get 2 500 watt lights with a stand for around 50 bucks Canadian.

The 2 lights are on the stand, side by side, I'm sure you all know what I mean.

Is it better to buy lights in double likes this, or when lighting will I probably be better off using single lights on stands?
 
Well a light as powerful as that, I could diffuse it and use it as the key light, or should I not defuse it and use it as the fill edge light. Or will it still be too bright and probably need some diffusion?

Should I maybe just buy a single 500 watt light on a stand, or am I going to be needing all 1000 watts together?
 
You can usually use just one head at a time (or both), if needed, so you've got a few options. Diffusion helps, too.
