I'm getting a "Hard drive full" error when I know it's not. Help please.

Hi,
I'm trying to move / copy some footage from my main computers HD to an external HD so I can work on the project on my lap top. But when I try to move the files to the external hard drive I get an error telling that there's not enough room on the external HD. The files I'm moving are 22.4GB and the external HD has almost 300 gigs of free space. I also tried a second HD with even more free space and get the same error message.
Any ideas or advise would be appreciated.

It's most likely because the drives are formatted as FAT32 instead of NTFS and some of the files you're trying to move are larger than 4GB. Reformat the drives as NTFS.

David,
To make this work do I need to reformat both the source / internal drive and the external drive, or just the external drive that I'm trying to send the files to? I'm hoping I don't need to reformat the internal dive because I'd loose all the data and would need to back up everything on the drive first, right?

Thanks very much for your reply.

I realize the horse is already out of the barn on this issue. But for future reference, you do NOT need to "format" a drive to convert it from FAT32 to NTFS. Microsoft's "convert" command--applied by way of the command prompt--achieves the same goal without deleting any data on the drive (by contrast, formatting a drive wipes out virtually everything).

The basic syntax at the command prompt is: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs.

For more help, type "help convert" at the command prompt in your computer.
