I'm getting a 100A-need help with filter!!!

Hi all,

I've been lurking in this forum for the past 3 weeks trying to learn all I can about the 100A and I would like to thank everyone in this fantastic forum for their generous contributions with their knowledge.

This Tuesday, I hope to receive the DVX100A from Willoughby's, DVRig Pro from Dan's EVs, and some batteries from Jarred(I hope ;D). I'm terribly excited but still not finish with my shopping ;).

I'm waiting to decide on which matted box to order, either the Bogan that Jarred is testing on monday or the Cinetactics.

That said, my question to everyone is as followed:

Do I need a protective filter on my lens at all time? Some posters here have recommended a Hoya multi coated UV filter but my understanding is that Hoya multi coated 72mm filter is not threaded in front, if true, would I still be able to attach the matte box in front of the UV? If I cant then what kind should I purchase?

I will be getting 4x4 Grad .6, ND .6, Black frost and a polarizer after deciding on which matte box to purchase.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Wow, you're really hitting the ground running equipment-wise.  I absolutely recommend using a UV filter as protection at all times--unless you have another filter protecting the lens.  The Hoya 72mm HMC UV filter does have front threads, so there shouldn't be any worry about attaching anything else.  There are some thin mount versions that don't have front threads, but if you stick with the normal Hoya HMC or SMC filters, you should be ok.

Don't forget to collect all of the Barrys' DVXUser.com trading cards.

My rookie year Barry Green card alone will provide me with a nice nest egg for retirement.  8) ;D

The Barry_S card is quickly appreciating in value. The technical stats on his card are incredible.

The original Ullanta card will be worth a lot. Kinda like Lou Alcindor before he became Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

The Barry Cheong card is fast becoming a favorite on the Canadian market.

No wonder I smell like stale gum. Terry, you're a card too--the joker in the deck.:D

Keith--Thanks for the kind words. There are a lot of folks with great expertise and experience that hang here. And people with raw enthusiasm that blow us all away.

You don't need the Pro 1 version in your link, it has an extra thin ring and is meant for attaching to very widel lenses (wider than the DVX's zoom). I use the Hoya HMC--which is great quality for $40.

The normal Hoya filter rings are fairly thin anyway. If you want to get the super multi-coated version it's still only $48, but I guarantee you won't notice a difference between the HMC and SMC.

It's absolutely critical to protect the DVX lens because if you damage the front element Panasonic will charge you $900 to replace the entire DVX lens. Normally with an interchangeable lens you can replace just the front element for a couple of hundred bucks.

Ah..I see what you mean. I will have to call and cancel that order and reorder the one you described.

Thanks again Barry.
