I'm editing Walter Murch Style!!!

Personally, I have no desire to stand up 8-10hrs a day editing.

I think the key is to have the option.

For some reason most video editors all work at sit down desks - but at all the radio stations I worked at my production room was always configured to work standing up (probably to aid in doing VO work). But I had a chair to match the height of the desk... so I could work for an hour or so standing up, and then sit when I felt the need...

I would just switch off like that throughout the day - which made for a pretty comfortable working environment.

Damn - alright... raising my desk at home just jumped up on my priority list again.
:)

Is that exactly what the article said? 'Cause if that's the case no one who has a 'desk job' should ever be able to lose weight.

Basically, what it says is when you sit or lay down your body supresses the production of the fat burning enzyme lipase. I'm sure it's not impossible to lose weight while sitting down for 8 hours a day, but it sure as hell doesn't make it any easier. Anyway, I don't see how it could possibly be bad for you. It's been a day and so far the only thing bothering me are my heels. Keep in mind I also jog half an hour 3 times a week so my legs are pretty strong. If you aren't in shape at all I could see how this would be pretty hard...Anyway it's my personal belief that most back problems (other than those caused by injury) come from a lack of exercise.

Lipase is not a fat burning enzyme, exactly. Its a digestive enzyme designed to breakdown nutrient rich fat for delivery throughout the body. For weight loss, fat is burned by sustained increase in heart rate. Proper diet and rest actually helps this process.

I've edited like this for awhile now... I think better, mind is more focused

and I always take breaks to go move around and get the blood flowing

my feet hurt a lot for the first couple weeks, heels especially

I actually stopped sitting because the nerves in my back and shoulder blade area started getting really strained after hours of sitting and having my arm perched on the desk clicking away... I think I've probably slimmed down some too.... but maybe thats from eating less cruddy food

Hells Bells

Eat sensibly and workout

That is the key. Sitting down all day ? What about the sleeping 6 - 9 hours a night ?

Losing fat is too easy if you know the science behind it.

If you got 2 grand you can buy a desk that adjusts from sit to stand position. Biomorph makes a bunch of them.

When I first started working retail and was on my feet all day the first 2-3 weeks were the worst. You also might try changing shoes around mid-day so you aren't on the same pressure points on your feet the whole time and you can also buy padded rubber mats to stand on (a must if you are standing on a wood, tile, concrete or other hard surface floor IMO). Make sure to walk around periodically too as standing still in one spot all day isn't really better than sitting in one spot all day.

Here is a good article from Occupational Health & Safety about the do's and don'ts of standing at work.

FYI all, this has completely changed my life. It's amazing. I feel so much different. I do keep a tall stool around for when I want to mix it up a bit. But it's really great.

But beyond how I feel at work, it's also helped focus the time I spend at my work machine. It's much less tempting to surf the web and do nonsense.

I think that if I try this, my back will thank me. However, I have no desire to give up nonsense. In fact, I'm seeking more nonsense.

I'm glad you revived this thread.

Some days I'm really motivated to edit for hours on end... other days I can't stand it (varies by the project)... which just makes it take longer, creating a vicious cycle of dread on that type of edit.

I'm gonna' try this. It'll get rid of the desk mat and chair also... opening up the room. I may even shift the whole setup next to a window or door (time to dig up the feng shui book)...

For anybody else tempted to try this out... PVC is cheap and easy... and once painted black can almost pass for real furniture... plus it will be easier to keep the front of the riser open, in case you still want to hide under the desk on occasion.

I've been standing up as well... although I've been away from home traveling for a few months.

I also bought some Z-Coils for my feet since I'm standing a lot.

Walter M described standing up while editing like being a gun slinger, ready for action.

Well, I run 30-60 minutes 6 days a week and make it a point to walk at least an hour on my day off, and I still consider staying out of a chair good advice. All types of pain creep up on you while sitting at a computer station. Back, neck, shoulder, and wrist pain are just a few examples. I'd type more but my elbow is aching.
