I'm becoming a Robert Rodriguez fan

I've never really been a big fan of his. Even though there were a couple of films I liked, there were others I did not.

But I've been renting his dvd's just to listen to his director's commentaries and he, w/o a doubt, gives the best commentaries and I really enjoye his 10 minute film schools.

Just finished watching spy kids 2. didn't like the movie but really liked the commentary.

He also has this great independent outlook and talks about ways to save money. Even though this film cost about $40 million dollars, his ideas are so quick and basic. It almost suprising how uncomplicated it has to be.

At least in this dvd, he really bashed film and was totally pro-video.

I just think he has such a cool outlook on it all.

what amazes me is that he does just about everything at his own studio. i would LOVE that stuff. he's got a shitload of macs....all kinds of gadgets at his disposal. very talented guy thats for sure. if you like him, pick his book up "Rebel Without a Crew: Or How a 23-Year-Old Filmmaker With $7,000 Became a Hollywood Player." Its great- shows you how he got started. Great reading, def. worth the 12 bucks

You know what I love about that book? If he hadn't been editing with the door open at that TV station or whatever, we might have never heard of him.

i worked with Rodriguez on the trailer for Sharkboy and Lava Girl. He made a few small revisions to my cut and then I did the sound design. Never met him face to face, though. We just kept sending Avid bins and omf's back and forth over his ftp and communicating via email.

anyway, i'm not a fan of any of his films, but I greatly admire his working method -- like a mini George Lucas in many ways.

also, I know what its like to be inspired by a filmmaker outside of their filmography. reading "Sculpting in Time" by Andrei Tarkovsky changed my life. and at the time, I hadn't seen any of his films.
