Well, I'm going to ask a question that may be rude, but isn't meant to be. If you can't afford to make the movie, why are you making it? This trend grows and grows....people buy a camera (or worse, try and get someone to shoot their movie for free), want great sound, great picture, great acting, and don't want to pay for it. I guess I'm just a bit tired of people trying to get me to pay for their movie. (I know, I'm ranting a bit...) I just got off the phone with a UPM that wanted me to do sound for free. I offered to just charge an equipment rental fee of $100/day (about the same as a crappy rental setup here in SF) and they balked at that (I was willing to waive a day rate on this one because I just got a bunch of new equipment and want to use it...so I was already being charitable).
I know the original poster here wasn't trying to get someone else to do it for free...just a raw nerve tonight.
As far as a DAT or MiniDisk recorder goes, check ebay. There are always lots of good deals on both...you could also probably pick up a used A-T897 for fairly low cost.
