im a 16mm fan and..

i want to know if any of you know how much a normal camera is to buy canadian, and how much the film is , and how much to get transferd and stuff? bassicly if its worth it to just shoot some shorts and mabye a day of snowboarding?

There are a number of cameras to go with. I would estimate that a decent 16mm camera (to get a good start with) would go for about 1 - 2K US.

I love using the Canon Scoopic. Very easy to use. Auto exposure is awesome. Delivers the best results in its price range.

I always recommend buying from a camera store to assure that it will function properly in the field. Plus they will provide good advice and a walkthrough which could make the big difference on the first shoot - saving big bucks in camera repair, film, telecine, etc.

For 16 gear I use Alan Gordon. Ask them about their Canon Scoopics and any other cameras in that range that they may recommend.

If 16 gear is a bit to much to get started, try looking at super 8. Its compact (for shooting documentary snowboard, skateboard, surf footage), easy to use, and cheap. The results are often quite cool for a rough documentary film look. The grit and grain fit the rebel sport aesthetic quite well.

For super 8 gear I use Spectra Film and Video. You can get a top quality camera from them for under 1K. Ask about lightweight gear with good optics and slow motion function.

Spectra Film & Video - Cameras

The best place to get a good guage on film, processing and telecine is also Spectra since the have everything in house and offer great quality. They will have prices for both 16 and super 8 on their web page. Be sure to tell them that you are just getting started and need the best possible price - they will work with you.

Good luck with your film endeavor. Remember not to give up on the first try as it is a difficult field to master!

I'll back John up with the Super 8 recommendation.

It's an amazing format and comparable I feel to 16mm.

Of course If you have money to spend and want a really professional looking film I would forego 16mm and look at Super 16. I have seen some amazing shorts and such done in the past year or two.

However if you're snowboarding you probably want something really portable in which case Super 8 is the way to go. Most Super 8 cameras are only slightly larger than a big Hand gun. And very durable.
