Illegal Avid User Needs Help

I've been using Avid Express DV, downloaded, to do rough cuts on my old sony trv camcorder. This computer blows though.

It's a 1.69Ghz processor, and only 256 MB of RAM. It crashes doing complicated operations in excel let alone editing!

So I got two jobs, saved and worked my fingers to the bone. Now I have a dvx100a but guess what? I can't edit 24p, just 29.97 with Avid Express. I would need Avid Pro and Mojo.

Instead of upgrading, I wasn't too happy with Avid, although it being industry standard and all. What industry? Am I part of this "industry"? Will the "industry" come and get me? I don't want to be hired as an editor so being familiar with a popular deck doesn't seem too important to me.

I never learned how to use anything really so all my shorts are pure trimmed cuts. Nothing else. No color correction or anything. It takes me long enough to log then record one clip at a time (so as not to make my computer kill itself).

So now, I'm going to go out and BUILD a computer for editing purposes. I plan to keep it off line (kept off the internet to insure NO VIRSUS or crashes- a huge factor in editing in PC versus MAC).

I plan to build it in the Antec Aria Cube Case which is about a 7 inch cube and weighs 10 lbs. It'll be smaller and lighter than my field monitor. Rigged with 3.2ghz processor and 2 gb of ram, I bet it'll do. Maybe, after a few more jobs, DVrack or something.

So my question is: how do you bild a computer? :P

Seriously though, anyone familiar with the Antec and the ATX micro motherboard? Can it support the Pentium 4 3.2 ghz processor?

Also, any suggestions on which video card to get?
Do I need an audio card? Assuming yes? Which one?

Oh, I plan on using Vegas + DVD

The vegas 5 with dvd 2.0 architecture software....

I'll throw a DVD RW on the micro computer I'm building. Probably something like the Panasonic LF d521 DVD-RAM/ DVD-RW. The RAM will allow me to use it as an "external hard drive" to catalog offline footage and previous projects I will not be needing on my hard drive...

Re: Illegal Avid User Needs Help

That's why I posted this message on this site:

Don't know much about Vegas and I'm taking a stab in the dark (well mostly because I want one software that will adequately cover visual, sound and color correction and vegas 5 seems to be a nice post production package).

So, another question:
Vegas does not have nested timelines?

What are nested timelines?

I've used avid express dv and it has timelines that are nested- I'm assuming. What does that mean? What can't you do if you don't have a nested timeline?

Re: Illegal Avid User Needs Help

A nested timeline allows you to insert a sequence (project) into another one.

This makes it easier to build complicated projects in separate pieces and nit those pieces together.

Vegas allows you do do this - sorta- by opening more than one instance of the software with the ability to copy and past between them, but many of us will be happy when nested timelines are added to the Vegas feature set.

Re: Illegal Avid User Needs Help

It makes things much easier. It's something that's sorely lacking from Vegas. One can only hope the Vegas 6 will bring it.

Re: Illegal Avid User Needs Help

When is vegas 6 coming out. I'm thinking of getting a new computer, new software to edit this movie I got some funding for.

So if the Vegas 6 is coming out soon (by end of november?) should I wait ?

So the question being: are they coming out? I doubt it since their Vegas +DVD is new and their just being taken over by Sony...

Re: Illegal Avid User Needs Help

I wouldn't look for Vegas 6 before April, it seems like Sonic Foundry was in the habit of launching major upgrades at NAB.

I expect there to be a Vegas 5.0c out any day now, adding updates for support of HDV. I doubt nested timelines would be in that update, but maybe...

That quote's a winner!

Re: Illegal Avid User Needs Help

Just an FYI -- I've been using Avid 3.5 (not pro but not express) for over 2 years now on a 1 gig Athlon with 768 megs of RAM and dual monitors (matrox video card)-- and I've been editing flawlessly ... I have barely anything else running on it with the exception of Sound Forge for audio editing. My systems are not hooked up to the internet.

I bet if you upped your RAM and get rid of all the extraneous stuff, you'd also be able to cook with gas like me ...

btw, networked to my system, I have a newer Athlon64 (running at 2+ gigahertz) system with 512megs just to authoring DVD's and to encode video to streaming formats.

I haven't felt the need to upgrade my Avid editing computer -- if it ain't broke -- I'm not gonna mess with it -- it's almost as responsive as the 75K, mac based Avid Media Composer systems that we use at work (PBS affiliate in Virginia).

Definitely, I can't multi-task like the high end mac based Avids (our editors can routinely edit and digitize while encoding or after effects rendering ... crazy !) -- but for DV editing it, my 1 gig Athlon suits me just fine ...

good luck !

Re: Illegal Avid User Needs Help

thanks Sanchez.

I would have to up my ram and if i took it offline and got rid of my programs like you did I think I'll be alright, but I don't have a dedicated folder. I do all my scriptwriting, email browsing, dvxuser surfing, excel account balancing, budgeting..... and it's 5 yrs old now?

It might be time to get a dedicated editing deck while keeping this computer to do all my other random tasks. On this new deck I want to edit and author dvds.
