I was at Ikea today with the misses to get some spare parts for a pull-down curtain. Basically we only needed the plastic thingy to attach it to the wall / ceiling, and that couldn't be bought separately. So we had to buy an entire curtain and cannibalise that.
So naturally I was kind bummed... what the hell to do with "half" a curtain...? Then it hit me!
The curtains can be had from 70cm put to 180cm wide and they are all 195cm long... why not use it as a flag!?
A week or so ago I was reading a bit on cinematography.com and David Mullen talked about not only using black flags, but using flags in a variety of greys as well. Fx. if you are in a tight spot and maybe you don't want to do extreme contrast, then just use a medium or light grey to flag out.
This makes the pull-down curtains from Ikea perfect! At my local store they currently have them in a large variety of colours, incl. black, dark grey, light grey and white. The cheapest ones (60cm x 195cm) are around 12 dollars and the most expensive black (180cm x 195cm) is 25 dollars!!
The curtains are as close to dead black and light tight as possible with cheap curtains. You do get very very tiny specks of light, but they really are tight. We use them to black out our infant sons room when he needs his 10 o'clock nap.
If you think it's too long, just cut some of the length at your desire and sew it back up so the threads don't run. Best part, they are mounted on tubes that have a diameter wide enough to slide straight onto a c-stand arm. And they are light.
Check them out at your local Ikea or have a look here:

It would probably also be easy to sew some on tight on a wooden or aluminium frame.
