ikan VX7 and SmallHD DP1x

I shoot with a Canon XHA1s. Because of the tiny LCD screen, I needed a better monitoring situation.

I just purchased the ikan VX7 7" for my shoulder rig and the SmallHD DP1x 8.9" for tripod use. $1,000 apiece is quite a lot of money, but worth it if I could shoot with some confidence.

If anyone has experience with these monitors, please share. I may be using them both on a shoot this weekend.

I also considered the Manhattan LCD HD071A-C 7.1" and a Marshall 7" V-LCD70XP-HDMI-CM

i have a Manhattan 8.9 LCD, i use it mostly in 1:1 pixel mode with the XH A1/Letus 35mm adapter so i can get good focus pulls. the controls and remote operation are a bit clunky, but i set it and leave it at either 16:9 or 1:1 for either framing or focusing. it works great, mine is a refurb, just like new, and i think i paid under $600 for the screen, sunshade, and battery.

$1,000 is in my opinion too much for any LCD monitor, for a grand one should be able to pick up a proper CRT which is waaay better for color, and smoother motion (LCD's usually get hazy due to slower response time on small screens during fast motion).

That said the SmallHD is crisper and higher res than the Manhattan i have (used a friends once or twice) and while i like it more, i prefer that $400 in my pocket.

I have my XH A1 set up so the EVF is off or on, we rarely use it. the LCD is just set up to display critical data such as aperture, exposure, zoom number, presets, etc, while the Manhattan LCD is set up with NO info on it so we get a clean framing and focus pull. frankly i think the built in LCD is almost worthless for framing and ESPECIALLY focusing.

what's EVF? how does one setup the xh-a1 to not display info on the external field monitor and just on the xh-a1 monitor?

thanks,
Chris

EVF is actually "CVF" on Canon. It's the eyepiece viewfinder. You can turn that off in the display setup. "CVF + LCD" ON means both on. OFF means only LCD stays on.

To not display info on the field monitor, go to 2nd page of the display setup. Scroll down to "TV Screen" set to "off"

Believe me, I would much rather spend the money on some lights. I might have ordered the Manhattan 7.1", but it was out of stock.

I am not sure how to incorporate a CRT on a portable rig. How did they do it back in the day? Anyway, I was going for the lightweight. On shoots where I have access to electricity and room to work, I set up a 23" HDTV next to the tripod.
