if you've hated FCPX from the start (a great demo video)

So, the Magnetic Timeline is really Automatic Track Assignment.

I haven't used Final Cut Pro X, but I have read that like you said it has come a long way since its introduction, when it was lacking so much that it turned many away.

One of the things that reviewers mentioned was the Magnetic Timeline, but I couldn't picture it --- partly because they wouldn't describe it. They said it's hard to explain, you just have to try it. But if they had just said it's automatic track assignment --- you drag a clip on the timeline, and Final Cut Pro picks which tracks --- I would have understood.

The way of adding four keyframes, by dragging a rectangle over the area of the track, also looks like a real detediator (reducer of tedium).

That is a great video... Thanks for the link!
I know everyone has their preferred NLE... FCP X is mine.

FCPX is great, couple of things that I still miss are the ability to close specific open projects, and the ability to add ease in/out to scaling etc when keyframing in the timeline/inspector

The Magnetic Timeline is not automatic track assignment at all. It is very hard to explain and need to be worked with hands on a bit to really grasp it.

This give a quick look, older version but same feel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj7vC8ScOTI

I don't know how other NLEs currently work after using FCP X for so long, but I could never see myself editing without the magnetic timeline...it truly changed post-production for me.

Yes, for me it was the arrival of FCPX that made me decide to really get into video production. I had dabbled with video a bit, but I never liked any of the NLEs I used (old FCP and Premiere). When FCPX was released and everybody was hating on it, I though "they hate it, it must be great!" ;)
I fell in love with it immediately. Finally an NLE that was working in a sensible way, and that was FUN to use... So I bought myself my first serious camera and never looked back.

Too bad they've ruined it a bit by this new flat look in 10.3, don't like it at all. The new functions are great but don't like the flat look that's been creeping into everything since iOS7 :(

I really don't like it. Looks like the UI is now designed in a spreadsheet... (ok, I'm exaggerating a bit, but I wish Jony Ive would stick to hardware design). Also find it harder to use...

But don't get me wrong, I still love FCPX, but some of the joy faded with the new look.
