if you're not making any money off your movie, can you add any music you want?

I would suggest diving in head first into the multiple resources out there to find undiscovered talent. i spent three months demoing music on myspace, myjonesmusic, etc until i found a couple unsigned artists whose music would compliment and transform Heart of Now's soundtrack in just the right way. it takes time but will save you money and you avoid complications related to distribution. there are plenty of musicians out there inspired and influenced by Sigur Ros.

What if you have a local band do a slightly modified cover of an existing song?
they can't cover it without getting into rights issues. but they can do a knock off. we hire guys to do this for major trailers all the time so the studio can avoid the expense.

It's not like Nickel back goes to every student film using one of their songs to ask them to take it off.

The fact that they would choose a Nickleback song for their film suggests they have bigger problems than violating copyright laws.

Man, you beat me too it.....I was going to say that Nickleback will actually pay you if you use one of their songs in your film. No offense to Canada.
