If you submit to an out-of-state/country film festival, do you have to attend it?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I have to ask. There are some festivals that are either a) not in my state and b) not in the US which I'm considering submitting my short to. Since they are not local, is it mandatory to attend them? Or could I just submit the film and that's it?

some yes, some no. Look at the rules and regs of the festival. Ours does not have a "must attend to win" clause.

You don't have to attend any festival.

I'd recommend doing it though, because some festivals are great networking opportunities, and it's fun to see your film with an audience.
If it's a feature film you're submitting, most festivals have partnership with airlines and/or hotels and will approach you with an offer to either pay for part of your journey and stay for a night or two, or the whole thing as well as free VIP badges.

Even if they don't, it's a great thing to go, because every festival is different and going there will get you invaluable contacts and press opportunities.

In fact, I'd say even if you have a short film playing in front of a feature, and you get into a major festival, it's worth going and staying for the duration of the festival just to network and have fun. Even if you have to pay for everything yourself.
