Hi,
if you had the choice of camera for a narrative film, would you choose DSLR (canon mark ii) or Sony HDR-NX30u (camcorder from 2013 with xlr block) ?

Have a great day,

If I had the budget to shoot a feature, neither of those cameras would be used for primary photography.

But then it doesn't really matter what I think. Pick one and go have fun.

Put each of those camera names into the search window on VIMEO and look at as much stuff from each one as you can.

Those 2 will have significantly different looks.

The Sony will be super simple to work with, but will really not allow shallow depth of field shots - at least not like what you're used to from narrative style imagery.

The Canon will have it's drawbacks because you'll need to rig it up more to get good results, but shallow depth of field will be easy, and you'll have the option of using less conventional lenses. It will perform significantly better in low light too.

I assume you're asking about these 2 because it's what you have access to.

Personally, I would use the Canon. But if you do have access to both - do a couple of test shots in an environment similar to what you will be shooting in.

Indeed, with the amount of money and effort that you should be putting into recording a feature film, one has to wonder why even a BlackMagic Pocket is out of the question. Or a5100. Or D5200. Just to name a few <$1K options...

The first thing you need to do is sit down and budget your film.

If you can't do that then it doesn't really matter which camera is used.
