if u were to shoot at one focal length on s35 but not 17-50, which one?

When I got my AF100, my only fully manual lens was a 85mm Bower F1.4. I shot with it exclusively. Making yourself use one lens is a VERY interesting exercise. I really learned where 85mm works and where it doesn't. Maybe they need to do a focal length film festival! :) f^4. A focal length is chosen at random for the project and everyone has to shoot with just that lens. And, no 17-50mm in the hat just to make it really interesting :)

Focal Length Film Fest === awesome awesome idea

would there be a field of view equiv? Or would I get my different fov's by shooting different formats? 100mm on a 5dmII is MUCH different than on a gh or even more so, a 1/3" cam. :)

Personally I would say the FoV would be locked by S35 so if you shoot in other sizes, you'd have to shoot the equivalent FoV :)

I think this would be awesome. You are restricted to one focal length (one lens) but you can use any imaging format you want (FF, S35, etc.) to give different FoV.

But for the original question, I would go with an 85mm. Works for me for some reason.

50mm or higher for me. It most accurately resembles the same perspective as the human eye, and I feel anything lower than 35mm starts distorting lines more than I like.

I'd have to say a 55mm or a 65mm, I don't like going telephoto that much, and 16 is just too wide for me so I wont say that. I like shooting around 20mm -24mm a lot though. To contribute to the favorite side, I would have to say 35mm maybe 40mm is the sweet spot for best usable focal length for s35.

I bought a 35mm prime, just because I knew I could shoot a whole film on it if I needed to. I shot a whole feature film on 2 lenses once, they were 24mm and a 50mm, I just watched it back many years after shooting this (and not watching it), and I totally couldn't tell I only used 2 lenses. Restrictions are some times more useful then having 15 primes.

If I remember correctly, Monsters was shot entirely with a single lens, 50mm I believe. (And EX1 with Letus Ultimate)

When you go too wide, I feel from a cinematography point of view that camera movement around talent looks "off". Moreso on medium and close-up shots of course, but still those shots usually make up a major portion of a film. Many times people don't take the time to find good shooting locations (who does) so as a DOP you might be forced to go wide and back into a corner of a room, but that is not a good idea.

Many people think to get good DOF they must shoot open, but if you need to pull focus with a wide open lens that can be very difficult. Instead if you shoot more on the telephoto end and cheat by spacing your camera to the subject and subject to the background, you can shoot at F5.6, stay in focus and still have awesome depth of field. (If you want that of course)

My choice for "one" lens is definitely in the 50mm to tele-photo range.

Rather than buying a set of great glass what if lens manufacturers put everything they got into making their best and highest quality prime lens. The image circle would be large enough to cover the largerst sensor size and anything smaller woudl just be using the center of the glass. They could then get multiple sales on cameras which would be lower in price since the technology gets outdated really quickly these days. Rather than building a set of lenses around a camera, people would build a set of cameras around a lens.

I realize there is no way this would be cheaper for the consumer or manufactuer but just wanted to consider an alternative reality for a second.

Its called PL glass.

Our telescope is a 1524mm lens basically, maybe I should just use it? I do have the mounts to attach it to any EOS adapter. I am going to call my film "In the Distance" :)

I can register it, and I have the means to host the website for free...

We can form a committee, have categories, have an annual festival, and go broke running and supporting it - but still would be fun!

Will it be like boxing for the focal lengths? And what is the welterweight focal length? This is making me want to shoot with the telescope now for the shear silliness of it. And then make silly interviews "You know how Terry Gilliam only like wide lenses? Well I felt, that puts me too much in the actors business. Then I thought, why not shoot with a >1000mm lens. Therefore, the actors are natural because they can't even see me shooting them anymore. I take the unnatural out of the shot. We are working on a 10,000mm lens but haven't determined how to get our tripod on the moon yet. We are hoping Kessler will make an even larger Kpod for us. And as for gelling the sun, well, right now we are just using the moon as a bounce card." :)
