if shoot 24pa must capture ind. shots (not whole tape) to avoid render--explanation

I received this help from a creative cow forum expert:

"You are ALWAYS going to want to capture individual shots when capturing 24pa. If you try to capture the entire tape, it won't work; it reverts to 29.97 video, and it'll look bad because the 24pa pulldown is still in the shots.

Why does this happen? Because as you stop the camera between shots, the pulldown cadence stops as the shot ends. It re-establiahes itself when you roll for the next shot. However, between those two shots, the cadence is messed up.

So: if you shot in 24pa, you have NO CHOICE but to capture individual shots. Well, that's not quite right: you can pull your hair out using Cinema Tools to get the pulldown removed from gazillions of shots in one 60-minute-or-so long clip.

Hope this helps--it saved our ass-s...

I used to capture 23pA shots from my DVX100a all the time with Capture Now getting the whole tape at once, never had a problem. Frames are flagged, that's all. There's no logical reason for the tail end of a clip to stop having the frames flagged. How does the camera know you're about to stop recording? I just simply do not buy that the camera flags frames but stops at any point during recording.

The pulldown is not happening in the camera, all the camera does is mark certain frames with a metadata flag. Makes no logical sense to me in all the years I've been using a DVX capturing whole tapes successfully at a time.

I do it, it works, I really doubt this statement strongly.

Wendy -- his explanation is complete bunk. Though his solution is correct. But not for the right reason.

Ok... I've consulted many people on this and still don't have a decent answer as to why, but it has NOTHING to do with where the cadence sits at the end of the shot. Here's what I wager happened... Your DP turned the settings dial on the back of the camera. Maybe DP shot something with it, maybe not... -- IF you're going to shoot 24pA the only must is don't touch that dial nor turn camera off while recording.

If that was the case I'd be having this problem at LEAST one in six shots and I shoot 24pA almost exclusively.

But still -- people contact me asking how to fix it... so here goes:

Q: My material shot on the DVX in 24pA mode needs rendering and looks horrible in my 24fps timeline... I don't think the cadence was removed.

A:
1) Capture with the correct settings (they usually do this)
2) Try to remove the clips cadence in FCP by using the tools menu.
3) Use Cinema Tools to remove the cadence for you... VERY easy to do.

Where's your actual thread? What does the display on the DVX read when you put the tape in there and play those clips... it should show the scene setting used. Where are the interlaced frames? 2 of them Every 3 frames? 1 every 4?

We must make sure what fps it is... we MUST make sure what kind of cadence it has... then, we must get it to flag as 24fps.

Finally -- be careful of advice you receive on the net... even from ME!!

Oh, very interesting, because this was my first time with the DVX camera--and a few times I DID spin through the scene dial while shooting to see if I could get a better image. And I'm not sure if all scene files were yet set to 24pA...eventually they were.

I am very sorry if I misled anyone. Thanks tremendously for this explanation!

Captain Mench,

Where on the screen display does it indicate what scene setting was used when playing back a tape in the DVX?
Thanks.
