If I can buy only one light??

Re: If I can buy only one light??

Jarred,

You mentioned that most interviews are shot using Flouro's. Now when I shoot interviews for the news I usually will turn off the flourescents lights in the person's office or room and use my light kit to light the talent. Should I not be turning off the overhead flourescent lights?

Re: If I can buy only one light??

No no no, definitely turn the overheads off!

What Jarred means, I'm sure, is that interviews are shot using fluorescent cinema lighting instruments like Kino Flo Diva 400's. Fluorescents produce a lovely soft light, and are very comfortable for the talent to sit in front of. They are the preferred interview light. Tungsten light gets really, really hot, and to get enough light to make for good soft light sources, you may run the risk of blowing a household circuit. Fluorescents are very efficient, and because they produce practically no heat, they draw 1/4 the power of a tungsten unit. Tungsten is a very inefficient light source, expending about 80% of its energy draw as heat rather than as light.

But tungsten lights are cheap, and fluorescents are expensive.

Glad you liked it Elvis. That shot (and many more in the film) was done with a Jimmy Jib triangle, which is what I operate for my day job. I just bought a focus ring for the DVX100 so I can have focus control from the jib when using the DVX. I still need to get (or devise) a rod system for it though to mount my focus servos.

Re: If I can buy only one light??

im not only talking interviews... I dont shoot interviews so I wouldnt know, but for dramatic work.. Kinos are in 90% of our setups. Next time you watch a movie look for the white light falling on talent if its not coming from an HMI its probally a kino.
