IEEE 1394 Firewire & FCP4

I recently acquired a DVX100A to go along with a new G5 MAC 2Ghz loaded with FCP4 and DVD Studio Pro 2. Can someone tell me what kind of cable I need to capture to the MAC from the DVX?

Re: IEEE 1394 Firewire & FCP4

I had a customer walk in yesterday and get a cable for the same setup. He bought a 6-pin (fat) on the Mac to 4-pin (thin) firewire cable on the DVX.

My advice, though, (like anybody asked...) is to limit shuttling back and forth on the DVX as much as possible, to protect its mechanism. A cheap $150 DV camera oughta do the trick, works just as well, and uses that same cable.

Sure, refurbs, used, floor models, any would do the trick. Most floor models have just been handled a lot, that's all, but no tape ever run through them, so they're totally clean. I see deals like that all the time at Best Buy.

Aaah, David "Jimerson". Sorry Dave, when you called earlier on Friday, I thought you said "Jameson". Never connected either with Jubal28. Aaah, now it all makes sense. ;D PS how the heck do I send you a message? I tried twice.

Re: IEEE 1394 Firewire & FCP4

Thanks everyone. I got a cable from Compusa. At first I was trying to determine the cable size, etc. Now I know.
As far as using the Dvx for capture, I'm going to limit the use of it, but I just got the MAC G5 2Ghz, FCP4, DVD Studio2 and Discreet Combustion 3 along with the supporting cast of monitors, tripods and such. So, I'm in pretty deep on the funds right now and will have to make due. I'm planning to get a deck, but I will take the advice and will probably do the cheapie and get the Mini-DV cam. Thanks again everyone, I'll probably being hitting you all up for more info as I try to get the most out of this 100A before going on to HiDef (God willing).

How much did they hit you up for? I love how those retail stores gouge you for cables. Many times you can just buy a firewire card for less than the cable and it'll include a cable.

Gotta love Best Buy and those printers that do not come with USB cables...Sold to you for an extra whopping $25. :(

Head over to the electronics store and get a set of 2 for $8.

Hmm..I just realized I am going off on a tangent about a pet peave of mine. Sorry.

;D

That's a common mishearing of my name -- sometimes it gets REALLY butchered.  No prob!

Just click on my name to go to my profile -- then click on the option to send me a message.

I wondered if you might not be talking about refurbs and whatnot. Just wondered if new mini-DV cams had broken the $200 barrier yet . . .

Wow. I know we're only talking $29 here, but that cable literally costs $5 down the road from me. For $29, you can buy a firewire card with included cable.

Oh well, I digress. My apologies.....

Hi David, Newegg even had one refurb Sharp Viewcam on their site for $179 (with a 3.5" LCD!) I love Newegg, good store.

Re: IEEE 1394 Firewire & FCP4

Yeah; I've bought a lot from Newegg. Between them and ZipZoomFly.com, all of my computer hardware needs are met . . .

Actually, I'd be interested in finding a cheap(ish) Digital-8 camera to use for capturing other people's footage to edit for them.
