Is there any differnce in the quality a person gets between idvd and dvdstudio pro? Assuming all you are doing is making a simple dvd... does the actual movie look better on a dvdstudio pro dvd?

You have much more flexibility using DVD SP & Compressor than you do w/iDVD in terms of bitrate control, and I would assume a better compression engine as well.

if you can use dvd studio pro its better for you to learn it. Much more flexibility with it. And why not use the best one if you can!

I still use iDVD a lot for clients if they need a simple menu, and for rough cuts. It's a lot simpler to drop the file in, pick a template and autofill. But part of that is that I am just used to it. SP4 is amazing though, and as I learn it, I am slowly using iDVD less. It's kind of like going from some consumer photo imaging software to photoshop. Intimidating at first, and a bit more time consuming. But as you learn it, you like it more and more.

But as far as I know, there isn't a difference in the quality of the video.

Your image quality will depend on how you encode your MPEG-2 files. Using Compressor, you'll get better quality, as you have more control over the settings.

"Apple Pro Training Series; Compressor Quick-Reference Manaual" is a must have book, and only about $23.

"Apple Pro Training Series; DVD Studio Pro" is the best out there for learning DVDSP.

I dumped iDVD off my computer. DVDST is great and it's easy to do quick simple stuff, too. Once the files are compressed it's easy to throw a DVD together in 5-10 minutes. It'll take longer as you want to build more into it, but once you learn it, it's really very easy to use. I second both of Ben's book recommendations, particularly the one on DVD Studio Pro.

I know I need to learn it. Thanks for the tip on the book.

Windows....don't know how I ever lived with it...
