iDVD crashing

I wonder if anybody can help me on this. I have a pre-Intel G5 on which I'm running iDVD from iLife08. Recently iDVD has started to freeze when I try to open the program. I tried deleting Preferences, emptying the wastebasket, to no avail. Then I did that, and deleted the application as well. I re-installed iDVD, and it worked for a couple DVDs or so. But then the same problem with freezing.

Any suggestions? Is there anything else I should delete before reinstalling program. I'm wondering if the Extra Content folder might be the culprit...?

All input appreciated!

On any desktop that old, if you're having random issues with programs locking up, it could be a hardware problem.

I would get some compressed air, and blow out any dust aroud the fans and heatsinks (outside if you can, it could be really dirty). If that doesn't solve the problem, See if there are any memory testers for a PPC Mac. On the PC there is a program called memtest, that could test for memory deficiencies.

If your ram checks out OK, you might need to replace the thermal paste on the CPU (because it's not dissapating the heat properly).

If this sounds like too much work, or if you're afraid to be pulling things apart on your editor, I would suguest hiring a tech to do some of these things for you, or just buying a whole new system.

I would hold off on buying any new MAC PROs since intel just launched their 6-core CPUs today. Apple will refresh the Mac Pro soon.

Thanks, Demi. I will try the compressed air. Testing the memory seems a little bit out of my league tech-wise.

iDVD is only program that has ever froze the machine since 2004 -- did it a year ago too, so I tend to think that dust is not the problem.

I'd love to get a speedy new computer, but there is one problem. The kids need shoes!

Thanks so much Demi for that link. I think I solved the problem -- I took the cover off the unit and used some compressed air as you recommended. iDVD has not froze since. So dust may have been the cause. However, the problem may have been simply that I was trying to open one of my iDVD projects with a Final Cut reference file in it, that referred to files on my external hard drive that was not turned on at the time. Maybe that was freaking out the program and causing it to freeze or not open?
