Idiot newbie audio question

I've been shooting with a mic I got recently (a Rode NTG-2 Directional Microphone) but I've encountered some weird issues. When going over the clips in Final Cut Pro, most of the audio seemed to come from the left side only, or the right side would get very little. When I would shoot, I'd get in really close with the mic and usually have it right above them but don't understand why it's seemingly only on one side. Is there a way to solve this so it comes from both sides equally?

Its not the microphone, its your camera setting. You've plugged into channel 1, so audio is only on one.

You can either:
set the camera to what is typically a "CH1,CH2" setting on the inputs (this can be a software or hardware setting - what cam are you using?)

OR

plug another mic into the empty channel

OR

duplicate the left audio into the right track in FCP for dual mono, or convert the files to mono.

your problem isnt really a problem at all - this time you can fix it in FCP, and then just remember to get the input settings right next time...

Just so you understand, the NTG-2 is a mono mic. You can set the camera to feed both channels or you can just use one channel in FCP and pan it center but you are never going to get a stereo signal out of it.

Okay. How do I set the camera to feed both channels?

Why do you need to? Your camera footage is only raw material. Post is the place to take the single channel recorded in the camera and convert it into left and right tracks with the dialog panned to the centre position.

If you're set on getting stereo audio when shooting, there are things out there like the Rode Stereo Videomic (comparable price to the NTG-2) but like Steve said, that's what post is all about.
