Idiosyncrasies of the black and white filter

I sometimes capture B&W movies to put on DVD. The captured footage comes out slightly green-hued, so I usually apply the "black and white" filter to it.

Thing is, it still doesn't look black and white. (No, I haven't looked at the color meters, just thought of that now, but I digress...) But I've found that if I also then add the "sharpen" filter, without changing any settings to it, suddenly it looks like "true" black and white. (Sort of the same thing about fixing 24p strobing simply by dropping a filter.)

Anyone ever see this, or know why, or have any insight or comments?

Wish I could figure out why my captures are slightly green to begin with (I use a Canopus DVC100).

Could be that your color temperature is just a little off. Try shooting a spectrally neutral reference card (like a proper gray card) capture the footage, export a frame and give it a look in Photoshop. Read the RGB levels and see if you have a shift. You could also record some camera generated color bars and do the same thing with the white reference square. With both of these tests you should be able to tell what is occurring.
