Ideas? School Project; Homage to Tarantino

I'm with you half way. IMHO everything since Pulp Fiction has been drivel. Critics and fanboys read in to the post PF--but I don't think there's anything there. But PF deserved its oscar and True Romance was just superb writing. Dusk til Dawn was a riot. The guy is damn good.

I'm with you on REPO MAN! I think the same thing.

"A repo man is always intense."

Did you even see Jackie Brown ?

Jackie Brown, of all his films to date, is his most reserved (From what many complain about) . What a great film. I think the multiple P.O.V. sequence was as stylistic as it got.

I love Tarantino (No secret). He is one of those filmmakers that induces envy, especially from the wannabe crowd.

Aside from writing such killer films as True Romance and Natural Born Killers (Tarantino would have blown Stone's campy version out of the water) he has written every one of his films ...

Reservoir Dogs
The Four Rooms Segment
Jackie Brown (based off of source; Rum Punch)
Kill Bill I
Kill Bill II
Death Proof

QT is all about great monologues, gun porn type shoot outs, pop culture from the 70's and graphic violence to me. I would go through his best earlier films that you like and make notes about what he is doing that works - like the watch monologue in Pulp Fiction.

You could switch the watch for something else, then combine it with the cutting ear scene in RD (cut off something else with a good song that matches playing in the background) and end with the shoot out in TR at the end in the hotel room (but somewhere else). Just take his best parts change them a little and make a new short. You need a great end twist FX surprise....I have a little online story engine at www.myflik.com if you want to take the ideas through it to come up with a new idea fast.

Sounds like a fun project! Good luck!

Yeah, you're right, Jackie Brown was good (an adaptation btw) but I'd say it still marks the beginning of a his decline as it's a notable drop off from Pulp Fiction which is a classic IMHOP.
Pulp Fiction was on the other night and it holds up very very well. It STILL seems hip and cool and fresh and all that.

I can see the adulation with Pulp Fiction but how many filmmakers can even claim that level of studness ? On his 2nd film ever ?

He has only made 3 films since then; love them or hate them, Jackie Brown, The Kill Bill's and even the recent Deathproof garnering critical acclaim. Grindhouse

Even filmmakers like Spielberg and Scorsese have made less than mentionable projects since their first grand slams. I am a little disapointed in Tarantino's stagnancy and pace in working (3 film since 1994? I am not including the Four Rooms mini movie and am bundling Kill Bill as one since it was shot simultaneous)

I think for a filmmaker that has only done 5 films in his career, he is doing pretty solid work. Creative and different from the norm. Would we all like him better if he was doing cookie cutter bullshit like every other filmmaker in Hollywood ? Would we even be having this discussion ?

De Palma is a god !

Bastid ! :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy:

Even I admit he hasn't always chose the best projects; he still seems mired in the Studio System. But he is one of the few filmmakers working to day who has a career spanning 30 years !

He has some studness still left in the pipe ! He gave us (Most would agree these are above average or even great?)

Obsession
Carrie
Dressed To Kill
Blow Out
Scarface <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< E P I C
The Untouchables
Carlito's Way

(And I even find Casualties of War and Body Double to be rad films!)

Talk about a letdown:

Coppolla gives us The Conversation, The Godfathers and Apacalypse Now. His last solid work (as much as I like The Outsiders and Dracula)

Tequila ! :2vrolijk_08: :zombie_smiley: :cheesy:

You forgot Rumblefish. That film is beautiful.

I keep forgetting about Jackie Brown...and it was on just the other day. I really like that film, and it doesn't rely on his usual style as heavily as his other films (that is to say it doesn't remind me of a bunch of other director's work...it doesn't even remind of his work).

Pulp... is his best orginal work, Jack Brown is his best film based on a prior work(and maybe his best film overall), and Reservoir Dogs his second best flick based on a prior work, and one of his top three over all.

True Romance was okay, and Natural Born Killers held no interest for me. I already saw Badlands, and didn't feel the need to see a crack/acid concoction version with a pseudo-intellectual media message.

LOL

Well put; and yes, I forgot about Rumblefish.

I love both RF and The Outsiders but have reservation putting them in the same breath as his masterpieces.

I just saw Four Rooms, and Tarantino's piece was quite enjoyable. Bruce Willis was great to watch. Quentin was fun too. Didn't care for the Marlon (or was it Marlow) character. He was lame. Trying too hard to be witty, or funny, or interesting--who the hell knows. Anyhow, watch Tarantino's piece in Four Rooms. The whole thing is shot in one room--one set. A few guys hanging in a hotel room. I'd do an homage/spoof of that particular short. It'd be easy to shoot. A few guys chillin' in a hotel room, talking about the price of Pepsi instead of Crystal, and a bet that two of them made, etc., etc.,

One word:
Naked/LunchSpiderCrashM.ButterflyDead/RingersEastern/Promises

That's "how."

Although he's done some bad films, at least he doesn't have a Death Proof or a Mission to Mars. And I dare any one of 'Tino's and Palma's films to even remotely compare to Naked Lunch.

You're right. I have never once watched a Deplama or Tarantino flick, and wonder why they were using a giant bug as a typewriter, or why the character was suddenly gay. But, different stories to tell I guess.

I haven't read it, but I did enjoy the movie... even if I was scratching my head at times.
By the way, anytime you have to research a movie to understand it, that might be a sign.
