Ideas on establishing Costs of Post Production services

Dear all,

I would like to seek your help in the following questions, I know it is hard to estimate, but any ideas will help me alot.

I am starting a Post Production company that offers services in Editting, Compositing, Coloring, After Effects, and 3D. I will be using the Avid DS System, on top of Maya, Avid Composer, FC, and other softwares.

My main delima is how to figure out a price based on a new market for such services (esspecially Compositing, Coloring). I was thinking of making a system based on Time of the video, hours spent, and the required services seeked. The problem is should I set a set costs for each service or should it be per project or mix and match of both. As an example if somone needed only compositing for a 5min Music Video, should I multiply the cost by 6 for a 30min movie clip? or take it case by case?

also, what are the standard costs for a medium company with such services?

Your ideas and views are much appriciated.

Depending on Market and customer type, you will most likely find yourself doing project based quotes and a small mix of hourly for some of the services. For example, you "might" be able to do color correction at an hourly rate as an additional service to a project based rate. Where are you based? I like your choice of tools! :)

hey Michael,

Thanks for the reply,

My Market is In the Middle East area, with International clients... cheaper establishment :)

Can you suggest more fixed prices or actual numbers so I can toss it around in my head...

Thanks,

I would look to what is being charged in the area for the type of projects being completed. You may want to break it down to different price per hour for different services which will be based on talent more than the tools themselves. But as an example, capture, transcode, dailies prep will have one price (lower) than actual creative editorial. The conform and color correction can have a different price. Color grading will most likely be the higher priced service depending on tools, talent, and overall room. Additional services such as archive etc. can also considered. I can't set a price on the talent - the price of the editing system will be commensurate with system rental in the area. Package prices for two or more services can also be considered.
