Ideal hardware setup?

So for the past 2 years or so, I've been running Premiere Pro on my aging AMD Duron 1 Ghz processor/motherboard combo. It's been running decent, but with such goodies as Magic Bullet and other plug-ins, it's come to my attention that in addition to a RAM upgrade, a faster processor would be ideal.

So, even though this doesn't relate directly to Premiere itself, I was hoping to hear what recommendations other Premiere users had as far as processors go. I've been looking at the Intel dual core processors, but I'm unsure which would be best.

An older Intel D 3.0 Ghz processor is clocked pretty well, but only runs a 2mb Front Side Bus. A newer Intel Duo 1.8 Ghz processor, while having a lower Ghz rate offers a full 4mb bus.

Which one of these two processors would be most ideal for running Premiere Pro 1.5, After Effects, Photoshop CS, etc. on Windows XP? Any advice is welcome, thanks!

If you can wait until February, it's probably wise. In early '07 we'll start seeing Windows Vista machines. If you are buying a new PC, might as well get the latest operating system.

More importantly, Intel will unleash its Quad Core processors. Quad Core (they may be calling it Core 2 Duo Extreme -- I can't tell what their names mean these days) promises a big leap forward in power. It should be great for NLE applications.

Thanks for the reply, Sean. I do recall reading about those a while back. Unfortunately, I'm in need of a "quick fix"... My computer is a custom built hybrid which I reward every so often with upgrades and the like. Recently, my old hard drive crashed, and so when I installed Windows, I went to the Beta version of Vista, which runs well, but needs more power than what I'm giving it. So far, I'm impressed with Vista, and will upgrade to the full version when it becomes available.

That being said, the motherboard I've found is an ideal board for running Vista, and will work with either of those two processors. I'm just unsure as to which is the stronger of the two... As much as I'd love to get one of the new Quad Core processors, I think that's quite a bit beyond the budget I'd want to spend. My real dilemma is whether or not to go with the Pentium D or the Core 2. (both are dual core, one's got a higher Ghz, the other has a lower Front Side Bus, as mentioned above)

Hi GP,

I recently made the plunge getting a Dell XPS410 core two-duo (E6600 2.6Ghz upper-end), but haven't put it into production yet. Since I do studio work, I record directly into a laptop (tape for backup/archive): firewire in from XL2, DV Rack AVI saved to external 800 GB GRAID via a *different* PCMCIA X800 firewire card. Then the GRAID gets connected to the Dell desktop for quick editing/rendering.

Regards, Michael
