Idea - Should have a newbie forum!

Hello,

Just thought I would put out the idea of starting a newbie forum either for newbies on DVXUSER, owning a DVX100 or newbie on shooting DV (with a DVX100 of course).

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Robbie D

That's not a bad idea. Maybe Jared will read this. Here's what I think:

Have a newbie forum, asking people to check there before asking questions. It can cover basic audio (the ever present "what kind of mic should I buy?", etc) with links to thoroughly covered topics. You could do the same with some FAQ about lighting ("can I use worklights?" "what kind of lights do I need?"), tech stuff ("why does my footage stutter in 24p when I pan?"), as well as a list of "required reading", bith in book form, or other websites. I know a lot of this stuff gets re-hashed, and the only problem I've had with this site is that the search doesn't always work too well (at least that's been my experience). You could lock the forum so no one but the moderators could add posts. That would keep the forum clean and easy, but you could add pertinent info if you thought it necessary. I'm sure some of the more respected members could compile a relatively simple outline of the basics. The stuff that gets asked over and over. It would be a primer of sorts. Just a thought.

Yes . . . but would we still visit the newsbie forum, kids grow up faster when they mingle with older peers

Re: Idea - Should have a newbie forum!

I agree with Matthew. Throw em in the mix, let em ask the dumb questions... they'll learn to search the forum, and hopefully how our senses of humor work.

Whoo! Rich has transcended the title of newbie!

Congrats!

Re: Idea - Should have a newbie forum!

Hey All,

Both are great ideas but I still think having this type of forum minimizes "all the dumb questions" or the questions that you hear over and over again.

In other posts I have pointed out that I have not even run a decent camera yet.  Also, not even touched good editing software...but I am a very quick learner and you believe that I will be exploring all the forums on here just would be more comfortable posting in a place where these type of questions fit.

Most of you are light years away from me and other new DV users and there is something about putting us together in a class first before graduating ;)

Just my thoughts but anyway I still love this place and I will learn much from you all.

Thanks

Robbie D

Re: Idea - Should have a newbie forum!

If for nothing else, it would be nice to have a single topic heading to search for noob answers.

When people first join this forum, they become very enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge...having a noob section would give place for senior noobs to council their junior members, thus giving them a bit of satisfaction in adding to the community.

just a thought.

Re: Idea - Should have a newbie forum!

..you guys just want to herd them all together so that we can blanketly freak them all out at once by telling them that "the click" is the ccd prism banging around in there cause it melted off due to the fact that they did not flip the switch on the back of the battery before connecting it. for shame.. ::)

Re: Idea - Should have a newbie forum!

Cmon answering the click question is what gets me up in the morning!!!

Re: Idea - Should have a newbie forum!

Well, you could pour every secret you guys know into a single post, but put it in Latin.

Re: Idea - Should have a newbie forum!

I'd like to encourage newbies to buy Barry Green's book and DVD or else go through and selectively read the forums: "Technical," "Harware," and "Cinematography." Not because the newbie questions might be a nuisance or because the kind folks on this board are not willing to help and answer newbie questions (they still are).

It's because 95% of the info and techniques needed to become a good or great DVX operator/cinemtographer are already contained in this board, but doing the work themselves will give the newbies a more solid comprehension of what the DVX is all about.

When I went through and read all these forums, it took more than 3 or 4 of days, but it was a small price to pay. I made notes on the stuff I found invaluable into MS Word and I now have a searchable doc for use in the field when I find myself still scratching my head. I can print it out and study it when I'm waiting in line somewhere or anywhere.

Probably the best thing is to but Barry Green's book/DVD, an incredible bargain at $59. Now $69. Still a bargain.

Re: Idea - Should have a newbie forum!

I agree with moe that scouring the posts is a great way to learn stuff. Some of it things that you didn't even consider. The challenge for me when I first came here was filtering out what I needed up front, versus what would be good to know later on. A lot of the tech stuff goes over my head and when I first came to this board I felt kind of dumb. I was getting ready to shoot something and I had some basic questions about lighting, sound, and the camera. Most of the answers were not the debatable type. It was simple stuff that any experienced filmmaker would agree on...mostly. Anyway, I know having that info available up front, as a sort of tutorial would have been helpful. I still would have pored through the rest of the site because it's so damned informative and interesting. Now I'm an addict. I probably spend more time on this site than with my kids.

That's exactly what I was thinking. :D

Ya know what I heard is great for cleaning the Lieca lens? A brillo pad. Just rub it on there super hard. Apparently it works like a charm. ;)
