I was browsing through one of my computer catalogs and I came to the Iomega Rev. I thought it was interesting that you could use 70gb cartidges, but the cost seemed to high for what you were getting. I started thinking it would be cool to have a similar drive that just hot-swapped normal internal hard drives (at a low price, not one of these expensive raid systems). Thats when my search began, and I found Icy Dock (www.icydock.com).
This seems like a really great system for HVX users. They make both internal (5.25 bay) and external (USB2 or eSata) hard drive enclosures that are hot-swappable. Also, all of these units are compatible with each other. So you could offload to an external drive out in the field, then when you get home, slip the drive out of the external hard drive tray (quickly), and then slide it into the hot-swappable internal hard drive tray. I know, who cares right? Why not just plug the USB cable into your computer, instead of doing all of this hot-swapping. Well, thats only one of the benefits. Think about archiving. The cheapest storage solution right now are your basic internal hard drives. Now you can buy hard drives and swap them in and out of your computer (like you would a DVD). The best part is the price. It is only $30 or so at newegg.com. What do you have to lose?
