Iconic John Wayne role redone

Boy, I don't know how I feel about that. I love John Wayne and think he's irreplaceable. Yet, Jeff Bridges is one of my all time faves. And you KNOW he will do it his way. But, True Grit is a classic and what will they do with all the great iconic lines? I mean, it might sound funny hearing Jeff Bridges say the things John Wayne could so easily pull off. Or will they just rewrite the dialogue completely? Yikes. Also, what I loved about the original True Grit most was it's cinematography. I mean, STUNNINGLY shot. It's one of my favorite looking movies of all time. Most of that magic might be missing in a re-make.

I don't know. I get so excited when a promising new Western comes out because it's my favorite genre, yet new flicks and Western remakes usually fail to deliver. I have a theory but I could be wrong. But, I think the older Westerns also benefit from natural degradation of the film 'look' that can be attributed to time. Or, perhaps the older stock that they used. They ALL look gritty and that so seems to fit the time, place and theme. In fact, I remember when Pale Rider first came out. I loved it but I thought it looked too new. But, it was on AMC not too long ago and it looked mighty fine to me. Could be psychological or the 25+ years added since the film's release. In fact, that girl standing in front of Jeff Bridges reminds me a bit of Sydney Penny (had to look that up) from Pale Rider. Maybe in 25 years this Jeff Bridges remake will be considered a classic? Who knows?

As a guy who grew up on John Wayne and Clint Eastwood westerns, I wasn't crazy about the look of many of the "modern" westerns when they came out either. Silverado, Young Guns, Unforgiven, etc. But now, 20+ years later, they all look mighty fine to me too. So, who knows?

Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn...he can do anything but...that's a bit like replacing Clint Eastwood in a "Good, the Bad and the Ugly" remake. It can't be done.
