What is the difference between these lenses and Angenieux's other more expensive zoom lenses?

They are faster AND cheaper? What gives?

from another forum:

"[FONT=Verdana, Tahoma, Arial, Calibri, Geneva, sans-serif] I would say that the look of the EZ lenses matches the Optimo look (bokeh, color etc). The resolution should be slightly under the Optimo lenses (Angenieux claims 100lp at T2 and 200lp at T2.6 and above on the S35 versions). CA is more prominent than on the Optima lenses, but still very well controlled and, which I really like, they managed to color it blue / golden instead of green / magenta."

Band Pro demo of the Angie EZ:

Wow, $10k for the S35 versions, that's amazing. Looking forward to more tests and reviews but at $20k for the pair, this seems like an incredible deal. If you have never shot with Angenieux lenses, you are in for a treat, they do have a very nice, organic and smooth look.

If these are good I'd be tempted to sell my Canon 15.5-47 T/2.8 and get a pair of these instead of getting a Canon 30-105 T/2.8 to go with my current lens, as it'd be nice to have an extra stop with these faster Angeniuex zooms.

How do you all think they'll compare to the Canon zooms?

Had a chance to see the lens at IBC. Sorry to disappoint, but these are not similar to Optimo zooms and this is normal, because at 1/3 of the price you cannot get the same bokeh/color quality. The EZ series lenses can be compared more to Fujinon ZK 20-120 and Zeiss 21-100 lenses or Canon zooms. All of those are cleaner, expressing less image character. Once again, for the price - it is an amazing lens. EZ series was designed by Angenieux, but it is manufactured by a Japanese company according to Angenieux design/standards/quality, but aesthetically, these are not the same as 40-60k Optimos.

This doesn't surprise me Tomas, they would be undercutting their own product if these were as good for very little money. All of the Apple products we love are designed here but made in China and the list goes on and on. To me, they don't have to be manufactured in France to be good. It's all relative. Eric, only one way to find out, when they hit the market, rent one for a few days, shoot your tests, A/B them and compare. The Canon lenses are very good lenses, of course. But if these lenses at less than half the price give you a look that works for you, you'd be crazy to not own them, they are much more versatile than the Canon lenses. Not that it matters, but aesthetically, I like the appearance of these lenses, they would make any camera look good on set in front of nervous producers. I will be very interested to try these out and if they are good as they seem to be, I may suck it up and buy the pair if I am doing higher end production. For my little BTS world though, DPAF is powerful tool I would lose so we'll have to see. These would always be good for a rental for me though for the three or four more cinematic projects I usually shoot in a typical year. I owned an Angenieux zoom lens with my Arri SRII and it was a great piece of gear that served me well for almost a decade of shooting Super 16 so I have a fond attachment to the brand.

If these are "good enough"... then it would seem to me - from a pure "investment" stand point... they make lots and lots of sense. S35 & FF with ability to swap out mounts and covering a pretty decent range...I can't wait to try them out! I will not be expecting the same characteristics as the higher end zooms... but hoping IQ is close enough.

We live in a dumbed down image world where we are all concerned about shooting 4k vs. 6k or 8k, yet much of our work is viewed on 4" phone screens, iPads and laptops. For me these days, I have kind of disengaged from the resoltuion race and concentrate more on the image quality properties. Does this lens make people look their best or even better than reality? To my eye, the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II does exactly this and it's only $2k. But it's not a cinema lens, is not really great for narrative filmmaking. The Band Pro demo, it's hard to determine if these new lenses have that "magic", the lighting and way it was shot (hot blue/purple backlighting looks a lot like CA, even though it is not!) there is so much more to it than sharpness and MTF charts, there are the reflective and halation properties, how the lens deals with internal reflections and is the lens a good match for your sensor/camera/DSP processing? For me, the bottom line is always people and faces, does it have flattering skin tones? Does it mercilessly reveal every pore, hair, blemish or does it smooth people over a bit, making them look more flattering? I will be very interested to see how these look on the C300 MKII as they are the perfect price range for that type of camera. It will also be interesting to see what these do on high end cameras like the Arris and high end REDs and the Varicams. Angenieux could have a real winner with these and totally revitalize their brand. They've always made good lenses but they are not as popular as they once were and IBC seems like it should have just been called "Lens World", I have never seen an NAB or IBC where so may new brands and models of higher end glass were introduced at once! Lot's of other interesting ones too, but nothing in this low of a price range with this kind of reputation.
