I Won - Grand Prize Winner!!!!

Justin_Kirch

Runner Up.
What's up flow-as. I got a letter in the mail yesterday saying I am the Grand Prize winner of Panasonics extreme sports something or other. I remember signing up for this back in September on Panasonics website.

So the grand prize you're thinking? No, not the HVX unfortunately, but still a 3ccd camera that's worth a good $1,000. *drumroll* Unveiling the Panasonic PV-GS250:

So the question is, (after I pay taxes on the camera), should I sell it and get something to enhance my DVX? I really want a laptop, but I think I may just put the money into a savings account and wait until I need it for something that catches my eye, or even for emergencies. What would you guys do in this situation?

If it's brand new and SEALED then do not open it unless you want it. I'd try to sell it for as much as possible and take no less then a 30% discount (if even that). Then put the cash in savings.

If it was me I'd end up blowing the cash on the laptop or some sound gear... or possibly even take the money from the sale + some more $ and get one of the used DVX's that keep popping up lately. (2 cam shoots would be awesome)

thanks guys. i'm really up in the air about it. i wish it was another dvx so i could just sell it and get an editing system which is what my main goal is right now. maybe i'll keep it, maybe i'll sell it. the thing that makes me want to keep it is it takes still 3.1 megapixel pics. now that might not seem like a lot to some of you, but for someone that doesn't have a digital camera (me), it calls to me.

Hey congrats! I have one of those for my wife to shoot the baby with. Good lil cam

Congrats!

Thats a pretty nice camera I've used one before. If I remember correctly theres no manual settings, is there? I could actually use one of those for a trip I'm going on soon. So if you put it on ebay give me the url.

Cool Dude

if you can put it in savings (and actually save it) DO IT

because right now it sounds like your not in dire need of on piece of gear or another (that this thing will allow you to buy anayway)

that way when you gotta have a piece of gear that's investment gear (something you can always use -- steady cam, crane, dolly, lights) you can go to your reserve, rather than just trurning over the resource for the sake of turning it over.

Of course the only danger there is will you actually save it. If frickin' Panasonic had released the HVX any time close to target, they would have 6K of my money which was set aside for it -- but life happened in the interem.

Having said that ... you could get a nice cobra crane with the proceeds from that cam.

i like your thinking Jack. i'm pretty sure i will probably sell it. i've been wanting an editing system for a while now...this will hopefully put me $1000 (at most) towards that goal. i plan on saving it unless my car breaks down or some junk. i'm pretty good with money and do loads upon loads of research before i purchase anything. we'll see. time will tell!

Yeah, build yourself a real stable editing computer ($6-700). And, use the rest for periphials.(I totally spelled that word wrong!)

Absolutely. It'll need some storage upgrades (Hard Drives) in the future, but it'll get you started with some adequate space. The one I use here @ work cost about $800 initially, and we've probably spent $500 since we built it (2003) for extra hard drive space, new DVD burner, RAM, etc

Trust me, I actually started out as a computer tech, and learned some of the aspects of editing, and photoshop which got me into filmmaking.

Congratulations! Think about the editing system first, simply put when you start to edit you will become a much better shooter. A decent system to edit on though is going to set you back closer to $2500.
$1000 just for the program, whether it is final cut pro or premiere. At least a grand for the computer, you don't want just some hunk of junk.
And you need storage and most important, as much ram as you can cram into whatever you buy.
think about this though. you can pick up a G4 laptop on Apple website refurbished for $1300 with 60 gig hard drive and 1/2 gig of ram. They have same warranty as new ones (one year) and enough ram. The only thing that I will caution you about is to get a hard drive seperate to capture your projects to. I have had one of these powerbooks for 2 years and haven't had one problem with it.

I edit in a g4 powerbook, pretty loaded for 2700.

but apple just came out with the pentium chip powerbooks starting at 2K (probably not very loaded) I haven't researched them yet but ... hubba hubba.
