Coming into contact with that character, even if just on a message board, knocks you down about two pegs in your social standing.

I think we all noticed the decline in party invitations we recieved after he graced us with his presence. (Though that could also be because we were all stuck on the board, ignoring our friends, watching the drama unfold.)
