Holy smokes. Anytime a potential buyer or seller had some complicated nonsense they wanted me to engage in, I just check right out. I've been buying and selling gear on eBay for over 20 years and I've never been scammed. Sure some buyers and sellers can be a pain in the azz, but it's still the best and safest place to buy and sell gear.
Also keep in mind, this particular scam wasn't about a buy or sell gear scam, or at least had not gotten to that point yet. It was about identity theft. Craigslist can be a good place to buy and sell. It isn't requisite that you post your actual phone number. That was a choice I made, and a risk I took. But the opportunity to conduct a sales transaction, in person, in the safety of a monitored police department parking lot, there is something to be said for that. You get to inspect the merchandise, inspect the currency, see the legitimacy of the offer. I've done business on ebay too, plenty you have to careful about. Scammers abound everywhere and are tech savvy.
