I want your thoughts on a semi-budget friendly HOME THEATER.

That's the plan for me as well Ben. I'm definitely going in-wall. There's zero doubt about that.

I'll have to decide on the power conditioner... I used to be a total fanatic about hi-fi... I mean off the chart nuts about it. I ran dedicated breakers and dedicated lines... one per plug of a two plug outlet. I'm talking that nutty... but I've really mellowed over the years and I have to be honest in saying that I'm just looking to meet a minimum standard... that's higher then 90% of the consumer "home theaters" out there... but nothing pricey. I have the same philosophy about home theater as anything else... doing it right, and cheap... will be more effective then doing it poorly with expensive gear. My priority is actually more on maintaining the room asthetics over the total theater experience... so I'm going in with compromise in mind.

The Onkyo I'm looking at does not decode THX... but it does every form of Dolby decoding. It's this one here: http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?m=TX-SR506&class=Receiver&p=f

As has been suggested elsewhere in this thread... I'm not opposed to a 5.1 system either. I haven't had anything like any of this in about 10+ years... since back when 5.1 was state of the art... and I'm going conservative on the system. I've enjoyed my current TV with NO external speakers for the past few years... it's just that I have a pretty good opportunity to do this home theater biased living room in the new place... for not much money... so as long as I keep the costs low... I'm doing it.

Wireless speakers? Yeah... I'm not that crazy ;-)

Hey what I said earlier in this thread... you should look into employee accomodation deals from the dealer reps. Since your wife works at BB she can easily look up the rep in their book (I did when I worked there)... and you'd be stunned at the deals you can get. Back when I worked there I got some Infinity Kappa 7.1s (not these pictured... mine were all black)... for about $143 each! SHIPPED! These below are NOT MINE... but these are the same speakers that I got from the rep for dirt cheap... sub-$300 for the pair that sold in local high-end shops for $1700/pr.

Back then I had some sick stuff... and after that I only got sicker... until finally I had 18" subs with dual 6" diameter ports shaking the house apart to Raiders.

Something clicked when I turned around 30... and since then I've mellowed a lot on pricey gear. The system I intend to put together will be barely impressive to any audiophiles... but great for the regular folks. This is going to be a roommate situation and I'm already hesitant to go too far in guaranteeing that my roommate will always be on the couch when I get home.

BTW... I've seen Boston Acoustics in-walls go un-bid and un-bought on ebay for $87/pr for 6.5"... that's $43.50/ea for Boston? And nobody bought 'em? I may keep an eye out for those deals and just do this over time.
