I want to make a small upgrade...I have (blush) an Me66, in terms of bang for buck, upgrade to an AT4073 or stick with the me66/k6 and get a 500 dollar mixer like the Promix?

woah, thats a seriously tough question. Id actually sell the 66, buy an ntg 2, and try push for a second hand Sd302 or even mixpre.

not really the answer you want, i guess. i will say that the quality of the mic is probably more important than the quality of the mixer. Mixers are to a certain extent more about functionality than a dramatic boost in quality. that said, you DO get useless mixers, though i wouldnt quite put PSC in the useless pile for semi-pro work.

I've spent my whole sound career upgrading, and let me tell you, there is no such thing as a small upgrade. Tim is right - sell your current mic and buy a new one. Then look at getting more equipment. Since you didn't specify what kind of work you do, it's hard to offer suggestions other than get rid of that piece of crap called the ME66.

Yeah, some unsuspecting non-DVXuseer will probably buy the ME66 for $400 in good condition on ebay. Add $100 to that and you have yourself a decent mic.

Invest the remaining $400 into a 6 month CD and use the profits to rent a 302 for the times you need one. If you are actually being paid to get good sound more then a few times a month then you should be able to come up with more then $400 for a mixer. :)

Good luck
