I Want to be a DP!

Agreed with Geoff, but i'm from film school, just graduated. But there are some commercial gigs from some of the people i knew before/when i study film. It is true that film school never guarantee that position in the real world, there are some networking happening in the industry. But then, film school can taught you more than just light, shoot and process. There are basic terms for history, style, theory and practice. The school is the only place for you to make mistakes and get an honest evaluation/critics then suggestions, learn from it, make another mistake until you can decide whether you have what it takes or not. Based on the theory itself, you realized that the cinematography works with purposes, not just to make something looks good. It needs some imaginations to visualize words on script to screen. And what Geoff said, i agreed, a good director will boost up DP's work value. I've been working with a 'pretentious' director for my graduation film, no matter how my cinematography class praised my work, as a whole, it was nothing to tell about.

It's not like something that you made at your backyard, based on what you were reading, or learn on a forum, on your pleasant time, then ask your family/friends how was it. Trust me, in school....people are much more 'honest' than them. I got a lot of words like S**t or WTF for my works, but i learned from it.

I became a director/DP for quite short amount of time after i graduated, but then you must have something to show, as in your knowledge cinematography wise, or convincing ideas on how people would perceive you as a person you ought to be. And like people before me said, opportunity and networking.

Who knows, that one of your friends/neighbors/cousins is filthy rich, established a production house, and...you're the only DP he/she knows about? That can be your first chance, it happened to me, to be honest.

There is a long way to achieve the role of a DP, even sometimes i can't called myself a DP considering that a lot people out there are much much much more deserved to be called one and i still need a lot to learn.

Good quote from Geoff, everybody has his own path.
