I tested the DSLR Canon 5DmkII!

I will say this: Codec is important. Who wants to work with a shi*ty codec? Until these DSLR cameras have a decent codec, I'm staying away from them.

It's not the codec, its the way that they throw away pixels (binning) to go from 18mp to 1080p.

h.264 is a robust codec whose various flavors are used in things like bluray.

30FR/sec? Aliasing? No Zebra? No Focus zoom? Guesswork? Blue Ray type Codec? Excuse me. That's called a toy.

I'm wondering what do people expect from a camera that cost less than a good prime lens. I still own my HVX200 because I refused to believe that this very inexpensive camera was the answer to all of my 35mm adapter problems. I have encountered a few issues with my 7D but for the most part it does the job well. I knew going in that it would not be the camera for every job because I waited to hear feed back from many DVXuser comments and my tech head friends who jumped out and purchase 1. With all of the feed back on the camera to date there is no confusion in my mind. And for only $1450.00 I got my money's worth and then some.

Just my 2 cents :)

The question is not how much it costs. The question is whether it replaces the adaptor + video camera setup. Would you shoot a movie with DSLR rather than an adaptor rig if money was no object?

Absolutely!

But not to be a smart ass. If money was no object I wouldn't use either::nads:

Why does it need to "replace" anything? And yes I absolutely would in the right situation. For example when shooting sans permit out of public areas it's much better to carry around a DSLR than a full adapter rig. People don't pay attention to you if it's a still camera and you still get all the same benefit of an adapter. Shane Hurlbut ASC uses the 7D and 5D to shoot a commercial for the Navy a while back because for the money he was able to use several cameras at once in tighter spaces instead of going to more expensive 35mm setup. 24 uses 5D to shoot background plates because they're so light. So yea, those "toys" you're talking about are out there doing serious work right now.

Stop being such a smart ass.

I see another banning in your future.

Oh no you didn't just go there!!!???

...Whew...glad you didn't mention the "RC" name. I did...and I'm still trying to re-attach my head..lol

A 5 year old might have seen I was being ironic. It's called humor. But then again how do I know those who read these posts are actually 5 year old. It seems to me there are many 4 year olds here. Krummi may need a diaper change.

Call me old fashioned but DSLR is overrated.

Ohh, I'm sorry I missed your advanced styling of Irony. But after that statement I can confidently say that your arrogance is getting annoying.

Krummi I think you don't know the meaning of the word "Arrogance". The way you give morality lessons to somebody who just made a joke is definitely arrogant. Asking that the person be banned just because you can't see a joke is even more arrogant. Finally, getting annoyed for such a silly issue is unwarranted pride which is just another variant of arrogance. Since I'm not arrogant I'm not going to suggest you be banned but I do suggest you follow Jason's advice and chill out.

Meanwhile suggesting DSLR cameras can replace adaptor rigs... Now that's arrogant.

arrogant enough not to heed my own advice yourself? guess you couldn't resist one last dig, eh? well, it'll cost ya' 24 hours :)

Jason... that last dig was definitely worth 24 hours. :)

By the way, today we filmed the last scene of a 2 1/2 hour movie which we started filming on March 2009. It is a musical. It was filmed entirely with an EX1, Letus Extreme, and Nikon zoom lens. The filming too me all the way to Mali. One thing is certain: I would never film anything without Zebra and focus zoom.

For my next movie I will probably move up a notch to the EX3 + Spinning adaptor combination. I'm not sold on DSLR at all.

I'm struggling to understand how people can reliably get good footage despite this problem. Some major pros are using only DSLRs; for example, Stillmotion.

When I look at the clip in post #14 I cannot understand how anyone could control for that defect. The actor is basically standing still. It looks properly lit. There's maybe a little breeze. To my mind it's a 100% camera failure/shortcoming. I don't see how anyone can mitigate that ahead of time.

Still motion delivers wedding videos to their clients on SD DVD or on the net. Few pros use DSLRs (almost none) for HD production as they do not have enough resolution.

I think the problem with that shot is wardrobe. The fine details the jacket are throwing the camera off.

I'm not saying that the problem isn't a big one, but if you know what to stay away from you won't see it. I, personally, haven't had any problems yet.

That's because you have not yet filmed just about any building or man-made structure in focus. Forget bricks, window sashes, etc. etc.

24 uses teh 5D to shoot STILLS used as background plates. the 5D is a very, very good stills cam. No complaints there.

No, it's actually for video -- they strap a 5D on the outside of the car from every vantage point inside, so there'll be six or more cameras on the car (pointing outwards) and then they'll drive it around and shoot video.

This video is then projected on screens outside the car when they're shooting their driving scenes of inside the car.
