Disclaimer: I'm not a great graphic designer, but I think I understand good design (making it is a whole other issue :) )

I'd suggest researching some design principles if you really want to do it yourself, and read some info about logo/identity creation. Try sketching 50 different things on paper, then start getting rid of the ones you don't like, and make new ones based on new ideas from looking over the first set.

It's good to look at other designs, if you like the random shape thing, find a combo that works for you and your business. Sometimes just an interesting font is enough, so don't over do it.

Here is some stuff to get started;

KISS - Keep it Simple Stupid
Design is CRAP - Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity of elements.

Don't use too many fonts, keep things lined up, make sure it can work as B&W. Good luck, I hope this is a start, maybe some others will have some better advice for you.

I actually think you've got a great start going on here. What font is it? It looks a bit "familiar", which is to say it doesn't really stand out on its own, though otherwise, the only design element I can say to improve on is the proximity.

Tighten up the shapes and text a bit, but that's just my own taste. I DO like the second version's double-text, but the divider should be thinned out. I'd revert the shapes to the squares, as the I/O symbol is definitely far too common in my opinion.

You're almost there though.

Yea, the i/o symbol came from much inspiration looking down at my macbook's power button...

I also agree that the line should be thinner and the fonts should be less common. im gonna keep workin on it and hopefully come up with something eventually.

thanks for the comments.

Out of the last three I enjoyed the first the most, the last second, and the middle one isn't doing it for me (not enough contrast between the two half circles). Actualy I'm tied between the first and third, leaning more towards the third, I like the depth.

Oh and these version are much better than the first in this thread IMO.

Maybe try one where the image is about the same size height wise as the words. Feels like it dominates too much when the name should be neutral or dominant towards it.

But I'm no expert.

DVE09 logo is bad. Three fonts, the tired butterfly theme, bad alignment. At least all fonts are sans-serif type.

Brightcove logo is a good one, inventive and speaks the company name.

Yours are tolerable at best and horrible at worst. And all of them are, of course, derivative.

For example, in the first one, the angles of the blocks are much harder than the letters' angles, and the shadows are much darker than of the letters. I am not a fan of the color scheme, with such small blocks colors have no space to breathe and the image looks dirty.

In the second one you ruined QuickTime logo without creating anything new. Spacing between "rfk" and the line is too small, weight of letters above and below the line is different. The clock arm or whatever it is supposed to represent, looks darker than the circle because it is smaller, a known optical effect.

The third, fourth and fifth are all horrible. Again, the derivative and "dirty" image, no vertical spacing between text and the line, huge horisontal gaps in "rfk". Too many things to even consider these logos half-decent.

I don't mean to bash, but if you cannot create a logo yourself (I surely cannot), then either order one from a reputable designer (but prepare to pay a LOT for a good logo), or forgo the logo and just put the name of your company in some nice unoffensive font. For example, take your first attempt and throw out the picture, it will do. BTW, are "rfk" and "video" on the same line? It appears as if they are not.

java, thats clever, i didnt even notice!
Oh there's always a logic behind these things.
Like, the colors. They're basically versions of RGB.
I've no idea what BriteCove does, but I bet it's connected to that.
There's probably some really far fetched idea behind the actual shapes as well.

If I were you, I'd look at the actual shapes you can make out of the letters RFK or rfk, then do something out of that which kind of resembles something that's related to what you do.

cranky, thanks for being so harsh. IM gonna keep working on it. any additional comments by everyone is thanked ahead of time.

im gonna make this logo even if it kills me! lol

I'll probably get # for mentioning this, but while trying to envision a logo with 'rfk' I had a hard time becuase of the 'fk' part of the name. Depending on how the logo was arranged it could become offensive due to the North American slang counterpart. So that right off the bat restricts the design.

If you get really stuck, can I suggest you change it to something like 'rfw' or similar?
No offense, but 'rfk' for the above reasons is too aggressive a name for a video company imo.

The shapes of your logo in post #4 was my favorite so far.
