I received the Oktava MK-12 today and..

It doesn't seem to work :(
Alright, so I don't know much about audio, but before I bought some long XLR-to-XLR wires, I bought a XLR-to-1/4th in order to plug into my amplifier, computer, etc. it doesnt seem to respond to anything, the most I get when trying to record audio with it are these "blips" or something.
I've tried calling the sound-room but no one picks up, and I've filled out the online contact form but have yet to receive a response from them.

Maybe I'm just overlooking something silly, but that may be too much of an optimistic approach. I know how I screwed on the hypercardiod capsule, I'm hoping there's something else I forgot to do.

On a side note, the mic holder is quite rusty, and it checks out for all the points of the "legit" Oktava from that website that showed the fake stuff, except for the serial number (it has none, as the site said that mics 2 years or older did not have any--im guessing it is an old mic?)

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what does that mean? I've heard the term used quite often but im not sure what it meant..I always assumed that the unit it was plugged into would supply it with power.

Guitar amplifiers or line inputs won't provide phantom power. Try borrowing a mixer with a phantom power (it's a swich you have to filp) or using your DVX (if you have one...)

For $50 you can get a behringer mixer that provides phantom power... There are also adapters that you can buy in any studio section of a guitar store that is a phantom power supply station... Or use your camera if it has it...

I hate to say this, but 99% of professional mics require phantom power... you can get a phantom power box for only $39 if you just want to get juice to the mic... but if you have a DVX then it already takes care of that.

I used to qualify all my mic suggestions by adding "IF YOU HAVE A DVX"... but I never had anybody tell me otherwise... so I started assuming everyone had phantom power on tap.

Don't worry... once you get phantom to that mic you won't regret your purchase... even with a phantom box (if you don't have a DVX) it's still a sub-$200 mic that outperforms mics that are 2-3 times the cost.

Thank you for the replies.
I do indeed have a DVX, just not any XLR cables (at the moment---I plan on buying the Canare StarQuad soon) to connect the mic to it.

The phantom power box seems like an easy solution, but a mixer for $50? that sounds pretty damn good, hook me up with a link (or model to look for)!

Here's another question though: I noticed the shortest XLR cables I could find were 3 feet long. If I wanted to ocassionally mount the microphone on the DVX, is there a much shorter cable I could buy so as to not have all this excess cable flopping around all over the place?

Trew audio... all XLRs will be StarQuad (unless you ask for something else) and you can get them any length you want. 6 inches to 100 feet.

The DVX supplies phantom power... you don't need a phantom power box to run the mic.

That's your call... I checked the auction and it looks like you could get several cables from this guy... but the thing about ebay is "buyer beware"... I've been happy with 75% of my ebay transactions... but 25% frustration is a pretty high figure.

On the other hand I've been 100% happy with my cable purchases at the other places you mentioned... (and I mentioned).
