I really need to make my videos into High quality 40MB or less quicktime for website

Help. I have 7 videos that are going up on my new webpage.

I need the video to be resized in any of these programs as 640px wide for the quicktime window on the site.

Most of the videos are 1280X720

The smallest file i can get without losing lots of quality is 130MB but i need about 40MB or less.

I have the following programs for compression:
compressor
sorenson squeeze
FCP
mpeg streamclip
quicktime conversion

thanks in advance

You are coming close to the current limitations of AVC

There is not much you can do if you are stuck with Quicktime as a front end

If you used flash instead, you would have access to AVC High instead of Main (allows I8x8 transform), more consecutive b-frames (QTPlayer is limited to 1 or 2 before it breaks down), CABAC (your QT encoded videos only use CAVLC). These together usually amount to 10-30% better compression on most sources. Since most of your material seems to have slow pans, the increase in consec b-frames would help a lot. Increasing the number of reference frames, and keyframe interval will also help with compression (but decrease seekability for the end user)

Also your videos don't have QT fast start (you have to wait for the whole thing to download before you see anything, instead of instant streaming and viewing), which may be annoying to some viewers

What program do you use to encode flash? I have the CS4 Suite but have never used it to encode my videos. Thanks

I use x264

AME CS4's h.264 encoder is based on the Mainconcept SDK, but it's a "dumbed down" version

Use Apple Compressor and encode Quicktime H.264/MPEG-4 at your 640 width with frame controls. - Anyone running iTunes should be able to view it. - One thing iPhone/iTunes was good for is dragging all the Quicktime components onto even windows machines :-).

What is your average program length per movie/clip?

So use the ipod preset? and set all of the specs the way i need em?
The music videos are usually about 4:00min long

I wouldn't use ipod preset. This limits you to AVC Baseline, and no b-frames. Your compression will suffer. Quicktime AVC is bad enough as is.

Better compression suggests higher quality at the same bitrate or same quality at a lower bitrate - you are looking for better compression, not worse compression

filesize = bitrate x running time

So if you need a set filesize, you would need a set bitrate dependent on your running time
