I really need help with this decision...

if you want to be able to upgrade stuff such as video card, or put in other pci cards go with the g5... g5 will be supported for some time by apple soo dont worry bout the intel switch problem making ur mac go obsolete. personally for what i need i would go with the 17" mbp because its portable and powerful but can be also used as a stationary computer and u can also add fw800 drives (instead of having 2 hd's in the pm's tower). soo ask your self this. will you need something that can be used portibally as well? on site editing or capture. or even if your going away you can take it along with a fw drive with you to do some editing work. but i would deffinatly stay away from the imac for what you are doing. they make a great home computer but not what you need for what ur tryin to acchive.

and go with studio... because all you should really need right now is 2gb of ram. unless your cutting hd.

A lot of people will give you advice on hearsay- but I have been making suggestions through real world experience
I second that. I have both (a G5 double 2Ghz and an IMAC 17") If you max your IMAC memory to full, it will perform great. Here is the difference: a 7 hrs compression work in IMAC usually takes 4hrs in tower G5. Rendering is 1.5 times faster in desktop G5.
FACTS: INTEL G5 desktops are the future. IMAC does the job. You buy a PowerPC G5 (current ones) and it will be a dead investment.
If you can do with IMAC now, you can stil use it as your 2nd unit upon upgrading to newer G5s. Intel G5 desktops would be in their second generation and cheaper...
My IMAC is 17" PowerPC and it is great with FCP HD 4.5.(Intel ones are much faster)
A refurbished IMAC would make you save even more... Check the apple's website, $999 good deal...

G5 or Imac

G5 or Imac

It really depends on wether you need to do uncompressed and wether you want the power that a pci video editing card will add to the mix. If no uncompressed than you could go with a Imac but if your going to need to add a raid using a fiber card or a sata2 card and a video card than the G5 is the way to go. I have been waiting for the Intel G5s to come out before I upgrade so I can take advantage of the new cards to go with them. Big raid and fast card and lots of ram is geeat but the Intel G5s are not here now. Id go with the G5 because I can't live without slots to put extra cards into. It really depends on what you need now. Can you make enough money with it before the Intel G5 comes out that its not an issue to upgrade and there are always people that will buy your G5. I have mine sold to a customer of mine when the new one comes out. My G5 dual 2.0 with a 320raid for the main drive and 5.5 gigs of ram is over kill for him to do audio on but he wants it and I'll sell it to him at a reasonable price the minute that the Intel G5s come out. Good luck.
