I phucked up agian!!! ??

Okay, as I was trying to pull my heatsink from my motherboard I accidently made a small scratch on the motherboard. I was using some plyers by the way. Well to make a long story short, my motherboard is completely phucked!! It powers up and nothing. The dam monitor won't even turn on and I don't hearing any beep.

Is there anything I can do besides buying a new one to see if its the motherboard?

I'm such a phucken idiot!!!!!! :(

Can a dam scratch mest up a motherboard?

If you broke a trace...it's probably trash....you *might* be able to fix it with soldering but not likely. The MB traces are SOOOO small that it would be difficult to fix. If it was just a resistor or a capacitor it could be fixed relatively pain-free. But if the scratch cut a trace...it's a Long Shot to get it working again!! ~reservoir~

I already know the outcome of this! Just spent an hour or so trying to take apart and peice it back together. I'm going to have to buy a new motherboard and a new CPU.

I was going to delete this thread but I figured you can learn from my stupid a$$ mistake!

If you are not certified to fix something, don't. Take it to professionals. Don't try to be a hero and Macgyver it like I did. I just cost my a$$ another $200 dollars.

Okay, I guess I'm going to go to bed and cry like a little baby.

:embarasse lesson learned!

I know where you are at, my MB died & I didn't even have the pleasure of taking the tool box to it! On the positive side, when I replaced I upgraded at the same time. Just be grateful you aren't paying AUS$.

And you have no idea how your foolishness has affected the collective wealth of the whole DVX Brotherhood. We are now, collectively ooohhh say five hundred in the hole! If we still had the stars system (Glad we don't) but if we did! I'd hit em a couple of dozen times to help you ease the pain spider:laugh: I've heard some people boil the mobo after this kind of incedent...Hope this helps

Uh mino, Boiling will only disinfect it. Great if you want to insert it under your skin. But fixing the problem it will not. But you were kidding...Right?

Anyway, sorry to jump in late but I am a doctor, Of PCs that is!

First things first.
We have a motherboard that is not responding but powers up. (all you did was pull the heatsink)
There is a slight possibility that you have unseated the processor.
Remove the heatsink again and remove the processor. (do this with the power off)
There should be a little lever on the side that you can lift and the processor will slide out.
Make sure that the processor pins are not bent with a visual inspection.
Also look for burnt pins, (gold pins turned black)
IF EVERYTHING looks good, put the processor back on the board ever so gently alining the pins to the little triangle of missing pins on the top corner.
Put the heatsink back on. (dont use pliers!)
Hook any power cables back up that you may have pulled off during this process.
Power on and see what you get.

Still wont turn on (lights and no beep code)
Remove all cards and memory except the processor and heat sink.
Power up.
If the motherboard is still good it will give a beep code.
If it does not
Unplug the power supply and using a multimeter and a Ushaped piece of wire you can test the power comming from the power supply. (dont short it out, email me for detailed instructions before you begin)
If the power supply checks out then,
Either the Mobo or the processor is the problem (Not BOTH)
Since you claim to have scratched the mobo Replace mobo first.

IF you get a beep code, nothing is wrong with your mobo! (always look up the code in your manual)
Add memory to the mobo and processor and turn on.
Check for beep. If beep stops it is a memory prob, if you have beep (look up code)
Add the videocard to the memory processor and mobo.
Power on and check for beep code. At this point the machine should power up and boot.
If not replace your video card.

Try these steps and call me in the morning. (via Email) [Supp0rt@hartstudi0.com] Replace the zeros with o's. Damn Spammers!

This should help you.

Sorry for the alphabet soup but I have been doing this a while. I usually don't like to show my credentials, it is arogant looking.

Oh wow, I didn't even realize the stars were gone.

wow Hartstudio! I'm going to come to you with computer advice if you don't mind of course. I'm going to start doing everything you told me to do and see if any of this works. If not I'll just buy another mobo and CPU. There so freakin cheap now a day. I just found an old Kmart add back in the early 90's and it had this PackerdBell computer for like $1,500. It was I think a 486 with like 32 megs of ram. Geesh.

Thanks Hartstudio for your advice! Much appreciated!

I still remember paying $1450 for my 386 with 8MB ram and 10MB hard drive - from Sears. That was my first computer that I bought for myself, and my first step into the world of credit - with my dad as cosigner

My First was a - 386 - 25Mhz with TURBO (Anyone remember the TURBO button?) - 8MB ram - 40MB hard drive - 5 1/4 floppy & 3 1/2 floppy - Super VGA Screen - Windows 3.1 and Dos 5.0. No internet, No soundblaster (PC speaker only). How did we ever survive?

Wow those were the days of playing Wolfenstein 3D all night. My how things have progressed!! ~reservoir~

My first was a timex sinclair with 4k memory which I expanded to 16k with the$99 memory pack. No hard drive, no storage of any kind. Turn the damned thing off and all your stuff vaporized into the ether. We would spend six hours typing basic code, line after line of gibberish, Then we'd spend another hour debugging 3000 lines of code (one extra space or a missing comma or one of these< instead of one of these> and the damned program would grind to a halt with a "Syntax error" After 8 hours of messing and tweaking you'd type RUN and you'd have an amortization calclator or some such weirdness. No mouse...and it all hooked up to the TV. Yep, those were not the days!

yes you can...

yes you can...

a lot of little metal wires under n in between the breadboard(usually 4 layers) if you did manage to hit a few (1-*) then yeah you cant really fix it(you can) but risk messing other things up, cpu, mb cmos, ide bus, pci cards in your pci bus.

pliars are ony for really big nose hairs L.J. quote(i liked that 1)

dx2-66 with 4mb ram

couldnt get doom shareware working

so $200 for 4mb ram add on

dx2-66 8mb ram
dos/win 3.1

OKAY, I PHUCKED UP AGIAN!! DAM, I'M BEEN HAVING ALOT OF BAD LUCK! ANYWAY, I WENT OUT TO BUY A NEW MOTHERBOARD + CPU AND WHEN I WENT HOME TO INSTALL IT I REALIZIED THAT IT MY RAM FROM THE OLD MOTHERBOARD DIDN'T ACCEPT IT! DIMM,SIMM, SDRAM, DDR, ****! WHY CAN'T THEY ALL THE SAME ****! okay I'm done.

Does anybody know the smell of "the sum total of my life thus far"? Anyone know what that smells like? Lemme tell you. I was trying to change towers, just towers, I wanted a new case for my innards, as I call them. I transferred everything over, hooked it up as I had unhooked it (so I thought), plugged it in, turned it on....and then it happened. There was a very short firework display, followed by these really ugly plumes of smoke rising out of my new case. I quickly realized I was seeing everything on my harddrive literally "going up in smoke". My life smelled like burning wires. And then it just dissipated and went away as if it never happened. Yeah, good times......

wow, that's the first! I never heard of a computer blowing up! That's crazy.

The electronic gurus won't tell you this, but I found out years ago that, ALL ELECTRONIC GEAR RUNS ON SMOKE! That is why it won't work when the SMOKE ESCAPES.

I've smelled that too. 3 computers at the same time no less. It was like the 4th of July in Times Square. The power had been out for 3 days due to the Ice Storm here in NC a couple of years ago. I happened to be home when it came back on. All of a sudden I hear popping and cracking so I run to my computer room to witness 3 of my machines shooting sparkers out of the power supply. I'm sure you've seen someone grind metal with all the *pretty* little sparklies flying everywhere? Well that's what it looked and sounded like. Apparently the power coming back on surged everything (They were all on APC surge protectors by the way) and fried them to a crisp. Luckily None of the Hard Drives were Fried. I just had to replace the Mobos and the Power Supply. Nice huh? So now if the power goes out I just unplug everything to be on the safe side. OH and it took 2 weeks to get that burned wires smell out of the room. ~reservoir~
