i need some concrete answers

i finally upgraded to windows XP, and bought Adobe Premiere Pro (it's specifically version 7.0)

i have all of my 24P footage from my dvx100a, and i captured it using Sony Vegas 6's capture utility. all of the AVI files look perfect.

however, i'm lost as to setting up my project in Premiere 7.0. so i have a bunch of specific questions, and i'm not looking for general ambiguous answers..because this is pretty confusing at times.

the footage will all end up on DVD, to be played on TV's and computers. now, firstly, am i wasting time editing all of this in premiere 7.0? if not, i'll continue:

EXACTLY how should i set up my project file?

- editing mode: DV playback..or video for windows? and then what timebase do i use? if i have to pick video for windows... is it 23.98? or 24?? or 29.97? what is the difference between using 23.98 and 24 other than the obvious rounding of numbers?

- then, based on whatever the editing mode & timebase is..what do i choose for fields?? should i use fields, or progressive scan?

I don't recall if 7.0 has 24p support. You could edit your video in a 29.97 timeline, with fields set to "Lower field first." These should be the default settings for a DV project. It won't be a true 24p project but it will look the same when viewed on a television.

DV playback allows the video to be viewed on an external monitor while you are editing. Video for Windows let's you view all the video within Premiere itself. I usually just select video for windows, then switch to DV playback when I want to view on a television.

I've never really used 7.0...I went from 6.5 to 1.5...now I'm using 2.0. So my knowledge of that version is limted. I would edit with Vegas if I had the choice between Premiere 7 and Vegas 6.

24p support is dependant on the programs ability to remove the pulldown. All of the footage shot with the DVX is 29.97. When it's imported into a program with 24p support, the editor removes the pulldown and your video will play at 23.976(24p). When you export that footage to tape, the editor puts the pulldown back in so the footage can be viewed on an NTSC television. Or you can make a 24p DVD, and the DVD player will add the pulldown on the fly as you watch it.

In Premiere Pro 2.0...the settings would be 23.976, with fields set to OFF. I highly recommend Premiere Pro 2.0.

well today, i went to a local university editing lab which has 2.0 to run a test... i brought over my footage files on a CD and loaded up the program. i noticed the DV 24p preset and created a project using that..

..but i imported all of my footage and dropped it in the timeline, and it looks pretty bad. i can see heavy interlacing - meanwhile, if i simply view the AVI files in a normal media player, the footage looks the way it should.

am i doing something wrong here?

I just captured a quick clip in Vegas. The AVI file properties read 29 frames per second. I opened the clip in 2.0 using the 24p preset and the footage looke fine. I then opened it in a 29.97 timeline, and it looks fine in there as well. I'm not sure what is getting crossed up. Did you view the footage on an external monitor? That would be the real test to see if there are problems. Possibly a capture issue.

Wait. What? I am confused. Why wouldn't 7.0 support 24p?

Sbryan,
I never used 7.0...But I believe that version 1.5 was the first version to use advanced pulldown removal for true 24 frame editing. I may be wrong, and if someone has 7.0 they can chime in.

7.0 Did not support true 24p editing, unfortunately. As Sacksnack said, it didn't come in until 7.5 (Pro 1.5)

perhaps - I have Pro 1.5 and I noticed that sometimes when I am editing 24p footage, even on a 24p timeline, the footage looks very pixelated and interlaced in the preview moniter in Pro. However, once I finish editing and output to dvd or avi, the footage looks just like it was captured - no quality problems. I am not sure why this is, maybe the moniter tones down the quality to ensure faster playback? dunno...

Doesn't the monitor window only display one field or am I just making that up?

"edit" - It may just display one field but I just checked and I don't see any interlacing with 24Pa footage, only with 60i.

Sorry Wes, I should have specified, it will look the same unless you have a progressive scan television. I was just trying to keep things simple. Damn you and your expensive technology!
