i need "puzzling" PC gaming suggestions

And yes this has to do with screenwriting. :) I remember many years ago a game called Myst, and its sequel Riven, both slow paced fantasy world games involving solving complex puzzles. I have had a couple of story ideas involving worlds with puzzles, and I was thinking maybe I should explore games like those again to get my brain tuned on ideas for puzzles to incorporate into a story (you know, Indiana Jones type events when exploring an ancient ruin, etc). So to all you computer gamers out there, what are some game titles you might know of that I should perhaps take a look at? ~randall

Thank you Fahad. Good suggestions. I also had forgotten about Prince of Persia: Sands of Time that I own and have sitting in a closet- and I see it is being made into a Hollywood movie. I particularly am interesting in PC games like Myst, Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia, etc. if they require solving complex puzzles- to get my brain in that mode for writing that into a story. I don't want to get distracted by too much gaming, but I might have to fire up a few titles to occassionally explore. Never played Tomb Raider, I think I will have to check that title out (saw the movie though).

Tomb Raider. Oh yes, I used to play that--a lot!

Just don't become a LARA CROFT stalker!

She's a hottie.

What about the old, old, OLD game titled '7th Guest' for the PC. Now that is very old, and your progression was based purely on solving problems in each room of a house. I'm not sure how those puzzles would factor into a work of fiction, but it is something to consider along with the great suggestions above.

Old games? hah! i remember playing purely text-based adventure games- Zork! before the days of Windows and graphics. You had to use your imagination to conjure images / graphics, like reading a novel, but an interactive novel. "You see a torch on the wall head of you, and a chest on the floor, and a hole in the wall on the right" Depending on what you chose to do ("grab torch", "open chest", etc.) the game took a certain path.

Hah! Well it's old to me! :cheesy: Mind you I'm only approaching 25!

I remember 'Planetfall.'

*edit* this is from a movie rather than a video game but I remember in The Running Man about 1/2-2/3 of the way in there's computer hacking via puzzle solution that seemed kind of cool at the time.

I don't know if this will help at all but there's a game called Notpron (Not porn) it's part of the Deathball website and has 100 or more levels, but you'll never know unless someone tells you about it then you find it's all over the internet. We got stuck on the candy question had to do all kinds of internet searching. To get it. My first guess was right as I had just eaten the candy, yet wrong at the same time.

Nate,

i can definitely see that kind of website/puzzle used in a thriller type story.

"quick! we have to figure it out before it reaches maximum bandwidth! he'll kill us all!"

I remember 7th Guest. I don't remember anything about it, except that I played it when I was too young to remember anything about it.

I would definitely check out Zelda's. The dungeons or temples in those games are chock full of puzzles. I think you can get Zelda free (the N64 versions at least) if you get Project64, the N64 emulator.

not sure if it fits what you're looking for, but:

there's a relatively new action platformer that i highly recommend. it's 2.5d and it is EXCELLENT. it's called Trine. it consists of switching between 3 characters. each character has an ability. to finish every level, you have to find a way to best utilize all three's abilities to get through obstacles.

The Lost Vikings is an oldy similar to Trine.

i second the above.

monkey island is one of my favorites. kind of the star wars equivalent of adventure games.

by the way dougspice, do you know about Tales of Monkey Island? it's a brand new episodic series (5 total). i haven't played it, but i'm tempted to get it.

@op
i just remembered another game called LOOM. unfortunately, i don't know where to get it (esp. CD version). here's a excerpt from wikipedia:

A departure from other LucasArts adventure games in many senses, Loom is based on a serious and complex fantasy story. With its experimental interface, it eschewed the traditional paradigm of graphical adventures, where puzzles usually involve interactions between the game character, the environment, and multiple items the character can take into their possession.

it was a really great game, very different. the epitome of what you're looking for in a "puzzling" video game.
