Let me give some background before i ask any questions.
The long and short of it is, about a year ago I interned on a feature film and met one of the producers who lives in my town. This saturday one of my films screened at a local film festival that this producer was attending. After the film screened we were talking and he told me some of the people he works with direct commercials for NIKE and PUMA and my film would make a great idea for a spot for one of those companies. He sent me an email and told me to contact him so we could talk more. He also said "i needed to create and company and copyright the idea." He's a really nice guy and the whole thing was really exciting.
My question is... What do I do next [legally]? I'm 18 and have no experience with this kind of stuff. Do I need a lawyer? Really guys, I have no idea where to go from here. I would LOVE to see my short made into a national NIKE commercial, if it ever made it that far.
Please help.

I don't think you need to worry about forming a company just yet, but you should copyright your work. Got to www.copyright.gov for info on how to do this.

Just to clarify, you can't copyright an idea, only the execution of the idea. In other words, you can't copyright the concept of your short but you can copyright the short itself.

thanks blue. Maybe thats what he meant when he told me that. I thought a body of work was copyrighted when it was made tangible. Now that i've completed the film and have made dvds, its copyrighted correct? If thats true, why then, do people still send their work to copyright offices?
