hi,
its 1pm on wednesday, and we are having a problem with sync sound recording

we are using 24p on the DVX, and we have a fostex hard disk audio recorder.

audio is not syncing up, I am aware of the 4% slow down rate on the DVX audio in 24p mode, but how can I adjust recording on the hard disk recorder in order for it to record in sync?

THANKS FOR ANY QUICK RESPONSES

MATT

iamaloser, we are using a slate, were having sync problems because of the 4% slow down rate when filming in 24p, but we are using a seperate audio recorder, which obviously does not have the 4% slow down rate that the cam does, so I am looking for a solution to sync the fostex audio recorder to the DVX footage

wabbit, is it something I can adjust while recording to sync it, or do I have to apply a slow down rate in post?

The slow down rate you are refering to is the .01% slowdown that is applied to film in telecine. It does not work the same with 24p. The actual speed of the recording will be the same whether in 24p or 30i, or whatever (which is in fact 23.97 or 29.97, etc). If the Fostex has no TC being recorded on it then the only difference in timing between the 2 sources should be the slight difference you will get with the timing crystals in the 2 recorders.

Bascially if you have a sync point (slate or whatever) and are not using TC to sync then unless something is drastically wrong, you should be able to hold sync for at least 5 to 10 minute takes. AFter that time, you will start to see some drift.

Adam Wilt wrote up a whole thing explaining the 24p of the DVX. Might be some info in there to help figure out what is going on.....

Are you using the DVX100 or the DVX100a? If you are using the non-a, are you using audio recorded onto the camera as a guide track? The DVX-100 had that 2 frame audio advance in 24p mode. Shift the audio 2 frames back and everything will be good.

If that's not it, how are you exactly recording the video and audio. How are you attempting to achieve sync, and where is the sync not happening?

Which Fostex, the PD-6? If so, was it recorded in 24bit mode? If so, and you are trying to sync up in FCP usng the merge function, there seems to be a glitch with 24bit audio. I'll wait to hear what you are using before I go into it.

PD-6 is a DVD-RAM recorder. Only Foxtex HDD recorder I know of is the FR-2. I have run into problems with Sebsky Tools when bringing in 24bit audio to FCP. This was with a film project, not video, so I am unfamiliar with how FCP works with 24p and syncing audio.

Avid, on the other hand, zero audio importing problems.

Actually, the PD-6 can be outfitted with both. Which is cool because you can get a backup while you record. It mirrors to DVD-RAM and an internal HD.

I was just curious about which recorder he was using. Either way, I have found that bringing in 24bit audio and trying to sync it up using the Merge function seems to result in the audio being out of sync. 16bit audio works fine. This is in FCP HD.
