I need Brutal Feedback.

I just got offered a chance at a 9 mos. course for editing at Symphony. Graduates, any feedback?

I am entertaining the idea.

I don't even understand what you're talking about, but one thing that strikes me is you seem to have a lot of irons in the fire. What is it that you want to be when (or if) you grow up? :)

If you're talking about Video Symphony, I went there for a few months about 15 years ago, got Avid certified. Haven't stopped working since. I don't know what it's like these days but I had a good experience back then. I mainly edit on FCP these days, but have been juggling back and forth to Avid on a recent job so I still use those skills I learned there.

This is a school, that I have been offered for editing and AVID certification. Day job is starting to peter out. Battuta you nailed the school. Just weighing my options. I have been editing (not greatly) for about 4-5 years, and know my way around in FCS. But having the theory may be exactly what I need.

I will NEVER grow up. Get older, maybe. LOL. Yeah, but that's who I am. Always trying to further my education and skills. But Terry, you've touched on a mantra of mine. Experience and be trained in everything I can get my hands on.

LOL, if I actually revealed the certs I hold and jobs I can perform quite well, people would brand me a liar based on the volume. But when I was in high school, I decided to learn everything and experience everything I could.

If anything, the Dos Equis has nothing on me. Fly a plane, done it. Jump out of a plane, ditto. Drive a fire truck, piece of cake. Hold a degree in Audio, yep. Been a paramedic, same. The list is sadly, quite extensive. Life is all about experience, and I want all it has to offer.

OK,

He does the work of three men: Curly, Larry and Moe.
I heard that you went to the haunted house and they offered you a job.
Anybody who told you to be yourself simply couldn't have given you worse advice...
You're red shirt goes well with your eyes...

I hope that's helpful Doc.

porn star? lol

you're a former doctor who has posted in the past week that you've got a SWAT team commander coming to help you teach a class, you've been picked up as an actor (who is a camera operator), you're headed to the desert in arizona to supply the guns for a military film you're working on, and now you have the opportunity to do a 9 month course for editing at Symphony. what advice could we possibly give you other than to lay off the shrooms?

School is fine, but sometimes they are out of touch with what is really in the "real world". Even if they are on the bleeding edge, class takes up a considerable amount of time and dedication. Do you really need to invest that much? As mentioned before, you have plenty of merit and credits as it is, would another certificate make much difference?

That wouldn't be this school. They are very well respected in the LA industry, a lot of pros go there to brush up on skills, and they help students place real jobs. It's a technical training school, not a college, in which case I'd agree.

LOL, Ugafan, not a doctor, former Paramedic and Navy Corpsman (we are all called 'Doc'). And that Actor's Weapons And Tactics class is being held in May. I don't know, CQ, I have FCP2. Having an AVID cert would open the door to some great opportunities for a day job that would fund Indie-Arms even better. But it would basically shut most everything else down while I attend. It's just something I am considering.

Do you want to be an editor? Do you need to learn Avid? Video Symphony has a great rep, but if you aren't going to be an editor or actively pursue it as a career then it's just another cert and you don't need more of them. If you really want Indie-Arms to take off, focus your energy there. You run the risk of spreading yourself too thin. You can go to school later, watch tutorials online, sit down with other editors and discuss their choices, etc... If being an editor is not in the top 3 things you want to do for a living, skip it and focus on something else.

That said, if you want to be an editor take advantage of the opportunity.
