I need a Mic

Then can you reccomend something rather than just saying no? I don't need the best mic in the world...mine is unusable and therefore I have no way of capturing sound. I need a replacement.

Sony have a cheap stereo mic ECM908C I have used it to a Panasonic NV-DVX110 and i think i could be good for you

PHD, My broken mic is better than that one.

I have a Sony DSR-PD170. The mic that comes with that one is alright (the one that is broken). I can get a replacement for a little under $200. I just figured that for $200 I could get a decent mic that was better than the original.

Whoo boy. When you get some free time (and you'll need a bit), peruse the first three "sticky" yellow posts at the top of the forum. LOTS of info and you'll realize youve stumbled into the lair of people who really take their sound seriously.

The real short & sweet - it'd be really, really hard to buy anything worse than the mic that came on the camera - (and I don't even know what kind it is). The Azden line will be better than what you had - just not much. Grab one second hand if possible (eBay, pawn shop) and save the rest toward your octava which you can get new for just about the same price as the link you posted - but which would be a total disaster without knowing how to use it.

Anyway, welcome to the forum, enjoy the threads and feel free to ask when you can provide a little more detail.

Noiz2 .... *LOL* - agreed, I didn't duck....

Yes, Phd.... (gets up off the floor and dusts self off...)
I was the fall guy for you in my thread :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

MattinSTL took some pity on me and gave me a great suggestion on a mic here, depending on your needs:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=74742

I looked it up and it'll set you back a couple of bones - $539 was the cheapest I found.

Good luck, and please revisit this thread when you have found something and let us know how it went :)

Best wishes

So why not just buy the Octava now? Tell me what situations the different fileters (Or whatever they are called), should be used in.

I've been a member for a long ass time, but I just haven't dont a whole lot of posting.

Alright, after reading the sticky at the top, I decided I would go with this:

Kit #3: Web Short Film Producer Kit
Who It's For: People putting together short films, primarily indoors, and looking to cut corners where possible to save money but still want decent results.
Includes: Oktava MK012 w/ Hyper Cardiod Cap ($180), High Wind Screen ($50), Sambra Shockmount ($50), Gitzo 10' Boompole ($120). Total Cost: $400

I've already got a shockmount and a boom.

Can you get the octiva with all three caps?

Can someone explain the differences between the three caps and the -10 cap?

And, please reccomend a high-wind screen, and a softie that will fit this exact mic?

Thanks.

Ok. The Octava 012 is an anomaly - it sounds WAY better than its price. The dark side is it's very sensitive to handling noise and ambient air movement (wind). Your answers are all in the threads, but the short answer is a Rycote BBG (baby ball gag) and windsock. You also need a GOOD shockmount and a boom op with soft hands. This is not a run'n'gun solution.

The only cap you'll want is the hyper - more directional than an omni, less than a shotgun.

The sound room is the place to get the octava since they offer it with just the hyper cap, saves $$ not buying an omni cap you don't need. Also beware there are chinese knockoffs out there - sound room is generally the cheapest real deal. Occasionally also found on eBay, but no way to know provenance. Trew audio for the Rycote stuff - they have it even though it doesn't show in their online catalog - you might mention that cost 'em my order since I didn't know they had it (bummed). These are only suggestions, other places also carry it.

If you order from Sound-room.com, be sure to use the DV coupon code for like a 5% discount. The only other cap you may want to consider is the cardioid if you're using inexperienced boom ops - it has a wider pickup pattern that is a little more forgiving when not properly placed.
