I need a fast external hard drive preferably 1 terabyte or higher for temporary storage for my laptop until I have enough fund to build my own PC. Recommendations? My laptop does have usb 3.0.

I use the Seagate GoFlex range.

I have a fast spin speed one for audio files.

The great advantage is that the range has interchangeable adaptors and cables so you can use the same drive on many different input types, just by swapping the adaptor/cable.

Options include:-
  • USB 2
  • USB 3
  • FW 400
  • FW 800
  • Thunderbolt
  • Docking station for mains computers

Very nice

Just throwing it out there, dont they make 10k or 15k rpm hard drives? Compared to normal 7200rpm computer hard drives?

Dont know if they make 1tb sizes, but I think I've seen 300gb or 600gb somewhere

Yes, the Western Digital VelociRaptor drives spin at 10k and are available up to 1TB (here). In a striped RAID 0 setup, I'm sure that would be plenty fast, but the higher spin rate mostly helps with seek times. Transfer is not all that much more improved over the 7.2k drives.

The fast spin drives really come into ther own for audio recording, especially at high bit/sample rates (EG: 24/96 or 24/192), where you are trying to record a lot of data in real time and you would get drop-outs if the spin speed is too slow and cannot keep up.

the only external drive/emclosure ive never heard of anyone having problems with is the OWC mercury elites
you can see them here in the upper right area of the page in single drive and RAID varieties:

i have 4 or 5 in use right now.

or if you dont need RAID performance, how about a dock and just fast naked drive?
i also have two of those and a squadron of 7200 rpm naked drives for smaller one-off jobs...:

okay sounds good. Which docking station do you guys recommend? and which drives? If I use the docking station, I can transfer the drives to my computer when I start building it right?

certainly.

the only drawback to a single drive or single drive dock is that you wont get the benefit of the RAID speed. sometimes i find that important, others i dont. depends on the size of the project and proximity of the deadline...
