I have a multi stop Caribbean job. I own 6 Pelicans & Porta Braces of all sizes and usually check in gear and have a crew. On this job I will travel on allot of small planes & boats and be pretty run & gun with little or no help. So, I have concluded that a backpack that I could carry-on is what I need.

I have searched previous postings but can not make a choice... Please give me some current input... I am looking at the Porta E3, Kata, etc...

Gear-
HVX 200
charger
4 batts
filters
lectro kit
powerbook 17
2- SmartDisk 80 gigs

I have a Kata HB-207 that has served me well. There's a spot for a laptop, but my Thinkpad's just too thick to fit nicely. Your 1" PB might fit very nicely in there. Other than that, I've been very happy with the bag and flown with it on larger planes. If you're going to be on puddle jumpers hopping around the Carribean it might be a different story though... I'd be curious to know how things work out.

I second the Kata HB207. I have had for over a year, first with dvx and now with HVX and macbook pro 15. It is great. well protected, fits in overhead bin, I even sneak it on the smaller planes that usually try to take your carryon and thow it underneath. It stuffs tightly under the seat in front on those planes. I am on my second trip to the mountains in Brazil from US now, and it is great.

Adam,

Can you get your HVX and your macbook pro in the bag at the same time? I've been wondering how that would work. Any chance you'd throw up a picture of how you have your bag configured for the camera??

I posted this before, but I would suggest to get the Porta Brace L3 Back Pack. I have very similar gear to you- specialy the Powerbook 17" and the Hvx :) , and everything feets and is well protected in this backpack. Its HUGE, but carryable, leaving both hands for shooting or carrying other stuff (like lighting gear).

I have the Kata 502. It's big, but comfortable as hell to wear and fits on a plane as well. It holds ALL of my equipment, plus some, and my laptop no problem. There are so many compartments, it's great. Especially the clear waterproof compartments for my tapes.

Ended up with the 2- Kata 207's

Ended up with the 2- Kata 207's

Hello Guys,

Reporting from the field- Little Cayman

Ordered several Backpacks from B&H before my departure and ended up keeping the Kata 207 and the smaller HB for my still camera. I manage to fit my HVX, lectro, Steadi Merlin, Headphones, 3-Batts, charger, MSE pipe clamp mount (for clamping on to aluminum pipes on boats), a 17" Powerbook & the La Cie 320 Little big disk, manuals, small accessories, etc.., my wallet, and a Canon SD450 in the one bag.

I lug it around the island everyday!! Bosts, divespots, beaches, ponds, etc... Everybody takes about 15 seconds a day to state and all agree that the Kata ROCKS!!! It does and has performed better than expected. The performance/price ratio can not be beat.

Ohh, BTW- The Cartoni Focus is also delivering the goods in the field. Tiffen Pol is not the best.

Cheers to all,
Prio

I agree. You can fit a suprising amount of stuff in the 207. I was amazed that I could get all my HVX accessories, plus a Rode stereo mic, 2 Wi lavs, cables and a Tascam 2 track with room to spare. Construction is frickin remarkable. I was actually more surprised with the bag than the HVX (only because I knew to what to expect with the camera, but the bag impressed me)
Get the 207. You won't regret it.

I bought the Lowepro backpack case for my HVX and macbook.. and it works so friggin well. Not only do I get my HVX in there with my laptop, but I also have my charger, 4 batteries, p2store, shotgun mike, 2 lavs, and my AC gack...

It's small, really well designed and you are able to carry it all day without much fatigue.. Has built in rain-gear as well.... Super sweet bag, and the best part is that I look like a 4th grade camper.... and not a guy walking around with an expensive camera in an obvious camera bag

I'll have to check it out tomorrow and I'll send you a message. It fits absolutely perfectly.. and I used some padding from another case to totally protect it. It wasn't also too expensive. Like 180 or so

Agreed.... I'm currently wandering around northern India with just about an identical kit to your requirement and the Kata HB-207 is 'working' a treat! The only cavet is that it doesn't like rain!
