I May Be Switching To FCPX From Premiere Pro CS6. Here Is Why....

I'm not buying training materials. So far all of my questions have been answered by a simple Google search. I was ingesting ProRes 422 HQ files that were created via 5DtoRGB from the Apocalypse Now hacked GH2 settings. This was about 100GB of files and once I ingested them I allowed FCPX to copy them into the events folder it created on my G-RAID Mini. It takes a while to copy that amount of content. I had nothing else turned on for the import process.

Look, it seems like you want to put it off to user error, and that's fine, but not helpful. It was clearly a bug and hasn't happened again yet, and everything else is working fine so far.

If you already transcoded, why did you have FCPX "COPY" the footage instead of just pointing FCPX to the already transcoded footage? Just drag the already transcoded footage into FCPX and un-select "copy to events" and archive your Gh2 avchd. Then you would have waited only about a minute and not had 200GB's of redundant transcoded footy.

Secondly. If you have thunderbolt it takes about 2 or 3 minutes to COPY 100Gb's. I do it all the time.

So Gary. You're gonna pass up tips and workflows concerning media management (the biggest plus of FCPX) because you refuse to pay $30 or so $'s. Keywording and such is the best part of FCPX. That and the multi cam.

I don't need keywording. Haven't even touched it. I took the project's MTS files, renamed them using a mass rename software (i.e. REEL_02_CLIP_027.MTS), then transcoded and brought into FCPX. Now, I could spend my time keywording, or I could spend my time editing.

I picked editing.

You have missed the entire point of fcpX. It seems to me that everyone in here is giving you advice because your asking and yet all you keep doing is trying to bash the program or tell us what you are not going to do, or that you already know how to do it.

there is no way you are going to learn fcpX with google searches as well as with ripple training. Do you make a living doing video editing? To me it looks like its your part time gig. I am a pro and make a living of of it just like most in this thread.

You can't invest 30 bucks in training yet you want to make money doing this? so you take the shortcut and come in here ask questions and then don't listen to anything anyone says.

WOW

Well, he did transcode Gh2 footage in 5d2rgb then spent 45 minutes copying that footage into a redundant FCPX event folder instead of just pointing FCPX to the already transcoded folder, which led to him having to wait 45 minutes before quitting the program because he couldn't drag and drop clips to the timeline. Just trying to help him out...

You have missed the entire point of fcpX.

I see this a lot with people who really seem like they literally "love" this piece of software. "You don't get it, you don't understand it, blah blah blah." It's a load of nonsense.

It seems to me that everyone in here is giving you advice because your asking

I have not asked for advice. I stated I was going to edit my first actual project in it and that I would share my experience. Where did I ever ask for advice?

and yet all you keep doing is trying to bash the program or tell us what you are not going to do, or that you already know how to do it.

I've bashed the program once, due to a bug that happened almost immediately, and after that I shared my ongoing experience, which you apparently are still glossing over.

there is no way you are going to learn fcpX with google searches as well as with ripple training.

I beg to differ. This is merely an assertion on your part that has no evidence whatsoever.

Do you make a living doing video editing? To me it looks like its your part time gig. I am a pro and make a living of of it just like most in this thread.

Now why do you have to go all insulting here? To you it looks like I'm just a part timer? How would you ever even get that impression? That strikes me as, "Since you're obviously not smart like I am to be able to see why Apple and FCPX are so super duper awesome, you must be a lamer who only dabbles in video."

I hope you tone down the attitude when you deal with your clients.

You can't invest 30 bucks in training yet you want to make money doing this? so you take the shortcut and come in here ask questions and then don't listen to anything anyone says.

No one has said anything that is helpful at all. First, I didn't ask for advice, second, most of the actual nuts and bolts questions I had I answered via quick google searches and not asking any of you on here. I'm not spending money on the Ripple Training or whatever other product that those of you want to pimp at me because I don't feel I need it, and yet instead of simply accepting my decision, it keeps getting harped on. Seriously, what is so wrong with that? I can't recall seeing this sort of obsession in Premiere or AVID forums.

Are you insinuating that transcoding in 5DtoRGB is a poor idea? Would it ever occur to you that perhaps, as a first time using it with the project, that I might want to see what FCPX does if I let it import to its event folder? Perhaps I just like to have everything self contained so I don't have a project spread across multiple folders? And just trying to help me out with what? So far here's the help: "you're doing it wrong" (about the bug), and "you should use keywording". Great, thanks. I'm halfway done with the edit and didn't need keywording. None of the footage in this project can be used outside of this project, so keeping a detailed keyword database of the footage is helpful how exactly? Can either of you two actually give any concrete advice outside of regurgitating marketing materials?

@ Gary, You don't keyword things like : day 1, day 2, day?, wide shot, medium shot, close up, hero shot, bad take, good take, B-roll, Static, dolly, crane, steadicam, cam A, cam B, Cam C, overhead, crash cam, or anything? Because when I shoot on location I have a data manager doing these things so that when it's time to edit, all my useful footage is in a keyword collection. But then I can look up other shots that might not have been used by doing a keyword search.

IT'S NOT RENAMING, its so you can do keyword searches. Name your files whatever you want. They won't be searchable by keyword, you will be searching them on your own. I even use my recorder to put keywords in the take on set in the metadata, that directly transfer to FCPX. The media management is the most powerful tool in FCPX and can speed up post ten fold, if you learn it.

No because I don't:

have a data manager doing these things so that when it's time to edit

I shot this all single camera, one crew, I shot everything, all the clips are thumbnailed, why do I need to keyword? I would have to do it all myself, by hand, when I already know the flow of shooting and where everything is chronologically. That's an unnecessary step of busywork in this instance.

IT'S NOT RENAMING

Okay, I never said it was renaming, so not sure of the point of the all caps notice here.

I'm sure it can, in the right situation. This is not the right situation.

First off Gary I treat my clients respectfully. Which is none of your business. Second of all I'm not assuming that you Are in video part time, I have been doing this a very long time and I'm almost 100% sure that you're not a full-fledged professional. I base this on the things that you say, and irrelevance of your statements to what everyone else is saying.

Now that we got that out-of-the-way I can guarantee you there is no way you'll learn from Google as much as you will from Ripple training. I never said you couldn't learn anything from google searches, however the amount you will learn from Google will still fall shy of Ripple training. There's a reason why Ripple training costs money, and the guy you does Ripple training for Final Cut Pro 10 is a master at Final Cut Pro X.

Since Google is your best friend, go search "Steve Martin" on google. There's nobody around right now they can teach you more than Steve about Final Cut Pro X. Again like I stated before if you were a true professional and this is how you make your living you would have no problem spending $30 to buy the Ripple training so that you can better yourself to in turn better your business, however since this isn't your full-fledged job you're not really concerned with spending the money to become better because you're only doing it part-time.

As far as saying that we love the program, yes we do love the program it does everything when you too and it's causes no issues whatsoever.

And I know that I'm not speaking out of line because everybody in this thread has either disappeared or got aggravated with you.

Hey Dusty, am I missing something here? If I am wrong let me know.

Thanks for the clips, Chris.

I have been doing this a very long time and I'm almost 100% sure that you're not a full-fledged professional. I base this on the things that you say, and irrelevance of your statements to what everyone else is saying.

You may want to reconsider your powers of deduction then. And "irrelevance" of my statements? What are you talking about exactly? The fact I ran into a bug that no one else has run into so obviously I'm either a liar or an idiot?

if you were a true professional and this is how you make your living you would have no problem spending $30 to buy the Ripple training so that you can better yourself to in turn better your business, however since this isn't your full-fledged job you're not really concerned with spending the money to become better because you're only doing it part-time.

Have you ever heard of the "No True Scotsman" argument? In short, it's a logical fallacy. Second, it's not just $30, and it's disingenuous to keep tossing that number around. It's $30 per video (and $50 if you want full 1080p HD). So let's say because keywording is apparently so damn important for a small music video project, that I need to watch FCPX - Media Management & Collaboration. That's $40. But, wait, now I want to do a little Sound Editing in FCPX, that's $30. But I have experience under my belt, so maybe I should tack on Advanced Editing Workflows for another $30 as well. Now I've spent $100 and that's just for starters.

You know how I become "better"? It's not by sitting on my ass watching television, it's by trying something new. I try to add some new wrinkle or workflow or whatever to every single project I work on. The wrinkle for this music video was editing it in FCPX. The next project that requires it, the wrinkle will be doing a full color correction pass in DaVinci Resolve, and so on. Not by watching someone tell me mostly basic information of how to do things when I have a specific question at hand. I already have great resources at my disposal, from other forums outside of here about FCPX, to contacts of mine who use it on a regular basis. I can get my questions answered and not have to wade through the banter scripts that exist to make training videos have a more entertaining bent.

yes we do love the program it does everything when you too and it's causes no issues whatsoever.

I guess in your haste you wrote a sentence that is tough for me to understand. However, saying it causes no issues whatsoever cannot possibly be true, nor is it. There are plenty of bugs (still) in FCPX that cause issues. Just count your blessings.

And I know that I'm not speaking out of line because everybody in this thread has either disappeared or got aggravated with you.

Not sure how you're qualified to make this statement unless "everybody" has gotten in contact with you and expressed their opinions on me.

I should clarify my position on keywording. As I understand, keywording is how FCPX replaces the "Bin" functionality of other NLEs, and so, yes, I would be keywording for instances in which, in Premiere/FCP7, I would have clips sorted via different cameras or segments or whatnot. But occasionally, when it's just a small side-project where I know the chronological flow of shooting and thus know instantly where clips are, I'd just dump them into a single bin called "Footage". That's the case here, which is why I didn't bother keywording, especially because I renamed all the clips in the first place, so they are visually separated by Reel and take number by default.

One thing I've run into is the gap clips. I had read about them, but in practice it's easy to forget because the clips are simply a brighter shade of gray than the empty storyline. Not sure how I feel about them yet. I really like a non-magnetic timeline where I can just drop a clip anywhere and move it at my discretion, but I'm not running into any major issues yet with the magnetism in FCPX, especially now that I'm getting the hang of switching between the Select and Position tools.

"There's nobody around right now they can teach you more than Steve about Final Cut Pro X." I know Steve, I have great respect for Steve, but he is not the one and only end-all, be-all of FCP training. I know many other professional trainers who could teach you stuff Steve doesn't. macProVideo.com has more hours of training, less money, and goes into things Ripple doesn't. No one trainer is god. Not even Larry Jordan, also a friend and very respected.

Gary knows what he's doing, and I very much frown on flaming, but Gary, you did word your original statement in a manner that set you up.

Proper training does in fact take you much further and much faster in developing your skills than occasional YouTube garbage. Any high school chump can create a video tutorial. Is it the correct workflow for professionals? From what I've seen, mostly not. Are they good "teachers"? Not by a long shot. macProVideo.com for a small monthly fee lets you watch all you can and want. Very affordable, and WILL in fact get you more well trained faster than googgling things as needed. In fact, if you don't know a feature or workflow exists, you won't google for it, you'll learn the long way around things. Decades of educational research shows that proper formal training about the whole of a subject gets students up to speed faster and they go further than piecemeal education.

So, back to the OP. Someone likes FCP X and switched from PPRO. Yay! Now, can we take all of the wild off-topic tangents here to new threads? Its getting difficult to know what this specific thread is really about...

I will totally cop to that.

I think the problem stems from the assumption that I'm coming from a hobbyist background. I know the fundamentals of editing, have been practicing them for a decade already, and I don't need "training" per se, I need to know how to accomplish specific things. So yeah, some terrible YouTube video may not be helpful over all, but when I just need to figure out how to, say, make a clip play backwards, I just need to see how to get to those controls, I don't need the entire video. That's mostly how I consume those free training materials. A lot of skipping around to find just the segment I need. One of the clips that Chris linked involved grouping clips. Most of the video was spent discussing why grouping is important. I know about grouping, I use it all the time in Premiere, I don't need that bit, I just need to know specifically how FCPX does it (not that I wouldn't have been able to figure it out, I'm all about checking out right-click context menus as most options that I'm looking for can be found there).

That's great and all, but it's your product, BenB. No offense intended to you, but I expect you to tout your own product. And whenever someone says they have the supposed "solution" to my needs, and it happens to involve giving them money, I can't help but have a guarded reaction to it.
